Hi, Ray and I doing what all good engineers do while trading. Practising our pen twirling skills. A little over 25 years ago.

My name is William Frederick Cooper , Alumni parent class of 19 The American School in London Ray and I spent allot of time together while volunteering at the booster club for two years. I had just moved from Philadelphia to London when I met Ray. And He was a gentleman and a warm soul and made me feel very welcome at the school and to London. I just found out of his passing, through ASL. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

As a volunteer for the Urban Outreach Center for the past 2.5 years, Ray was the first person I met there. He made me feel so welcome and appreciated from the moment we introduced each other. Thoughout the time, we got to know each other better. We shared a love of Italian sandwiches and hot sauce. I used to kid him everyday at the end of the pantry shifts if he was once again going to eat an Italian sandwich from Capriotti's sandwich shop. We also realized that the same disabled athletes he was guiding for the triathlon were the athletes I had previously been running with as a running guide.
Everyone knows how brilliant Ray was. At the same time, he was very humble. His face would always light up when speaking about triathlons and his family. His interactions with the clients at Urban Outreach were always caring, compassionate, and warm. He always made his fellow volunteers feel welcome, appreciated and equal despite the fact that we all knew that Ray was the ultimate and revered volunteer fixture who made the whole engine run. I always marvelled how organized he was in putting together the huge Thanksgiving turkey giveaways as well as giving the client check in system a major overhaul. Everything he did was precise, fair, and logical with always a sense of fairness and compassion. Through his work and interactions, he has positively effected the lives of countless people. My condolences to his family and my sincere thanks for sharing his passion, generosity, and selflessness with so many.

We are shocked and deeply saddened by this news and our hearts and prayers go out to Ellen, Rebecca and Sarah in the wake of this inexplicable tragedy. No words can express .......

I am reminded of three memories in particular, among so many..... 1) Ray leading the charge to leave a 6 course meal in our ski chalet to captain a team and win a `Broomball tournament´ on ice in the local village 2) Ray´s heart for the poor, serving at the local food banks in London and New York and being a regular mock interviewer at the local youth employability charity I chaired in London 3) being an amazing father and mentor to so many, including our kids. I recall some wisdom he shared when my kids were in their teens / tweens and we were grappling with school decisions. He shared, `Children are not vessels to be filled but lamps to be lit´.

Thank you Ray for being an shining example of what it means to be authentically human and deeply compassionate in your own quiet unassuming way. May we honour your memory by seeking to do the same.
