Raymond Harry Chown, 91, of Saint Clair Shores, formerly of Grosse Pointe Park, Farms and Woods passed away peacefully with family on March 3, 2025 of congestive heart failure. Ray was born in Detroit on June 9, 1933 to Sidney and Beatrice Chown. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sally, brother Don and sons Kevin (Renee) and Robert (Jill); grandchildren Erica, Melinda, Nicholas and Andrew.
He is predeceased by his son Raymond and brother Robert.
Ray graduated from Cass Tech and joined the Air Force during the Korean War. He served in Paris, in the weather corp, before returning to study aviation and graduate from Purdue University. After graduation a final eye exam kept him out of the pilot's seat. Thereafter he was a longtime manufacturers representative in the construction industry with Gardner Vose of Birmingham.
Ray met the love of his life Sally in Port Austin, married at St. Ambrose and lived in GPP before moving to the Farms. He was very active in the lives of their three boys and helped coach Red Barrons Football and multiple baseball teams. He and Sally never missed a school, family, baseball, football, tennis, wrestling or swim event. It was the same for the grandchildren and their active lives.
Ray enjoyed working with wood and building, fixing anything around his house, his children's houses and many others. He and Sally were volunteers with St. Vincent DePauls and various committees at St.Pauls. Ray also participated in Bible study. In his younger years he was an ice boat owner, racer with sail number DN 57. His greatest sports love of all though was golf. He played countless courses in Michigan and Florida where he and Sally resided for many winters. His family and friends at Gardner Vose were his constant partners with his high point coming when he shot his age, 79, at Pine Lake Country Club.
Ray was also a long time member of St. Paul's on the Lake and the Knight of Columbus where he was a 4th degree Knight.
He will lie instate on Saturday, March 8th from 9:30 am until the time of his Funeral Mass at 10 am at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms
Memorial Contributions can be made to the Capuchins, Knights of Columbus Council 12121, or St. Vincent de Paul.
