Raymond Dann Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 22, 2017.
Dr. Raymond Dann, beloved family physician and long-time resident of Escondido, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 22, 2017, at the age of 86. Dedicated to his patients and the practice of medicine, he worked up to the day of his death, fulfilling a life-long passion. He touched many lives with his jovial demeanor and his genuine care for others; he will be sorely missed, by family, friends, colleagues, and patients. Dr. Dann was born in 1930 to Joseph, a Hungarian immigrant, and Mary Dann, from Ruthenia, on a dairy farm in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Determined not to work in the coal or steel industries, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1957. After serving in the United States Public Health Service along the southern U.S. border, he was introduced to a beautiful and vivacious girl, Ethel, whose parents were also Hungarian immigrants. Instantly attracted to each other, the young couple happily married in 1962 and moved to Escondido in 1963 so that Dr. Dann could start his own private practice. Dr. Dann was an outstanding physician known for his superb diagnostic skills and dedication to treating the elderly and those less fortunate. In solo private practice for 54 years, he delivered babies for 18 years and performed surgeries for 44 years. He made hospital rounds on his patients up until last year. In addition to his dedication to teaching, providing long-term care was important to him; he was one of the founders and active members of the California Long-Term Medical Care Association. He was also Medical Director of several nursing facilities, Chief of Staff at Palomar Medical Center in 1974, and the longest-serving member on its medical staff. He was a member of the San Diego County Medical Society for 55 years, and of the American Medical Association, California Medical Association, and the American Medical Directors Association. Dr. Dann was a devoted and generous husband and father. His love of knowledge and drive for a college education was instilled in his children, and he was very proud of their accomplishments and their work ethic. He loved to read, cook, rock-hunt, travel, dance, and especially tend his indoor and outdoor gardens comprised of many rare fruit and tropical plants. He had a deep understanding of the Bible and a great admiration for God and the works of His son Jesus Christ. He was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1953, and remained faithful to Jehovah until his death. Dr. Dann is loved and will forever be missed by his wife, Ethel; six children, Jeannine, Rachel, Sara, Julie, Raymond, and Melea; sisters, Betty and Jeanne and sister-in-law Carmel; grandchildren, Cole, Hannah, Leah, Nathan, Claire, Finn, Saraya, Archer, Raelyn, and Christina; children's spouses, John, Carl, Steve, Chris, Jaime, Eric; and many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. Dr. Dann's twinkling blue eyes, smile and laugh will not be forgotten. His legacy will live on through the many lives touched by his humble and caring spirit. The Dann family would like to thank his loyal staff for their service, including Barbara Morton, Teresa, Debbie, Maria, Nancy, Ailyn, Margot, Mayra, Nallely, and Donna. The family also would like to thank the staff of Palomar Medical Center for their excellent care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made in honor of Dr. Raymond Dann to the American Heart Association, California Breast Cancer Research Program or Watch Tower Tract and Bible Society.

To the entire Dann Family,

Your father, Dr. Dann, was so kind and generous - kind to me always when I visited his office and so generous with his time, his most precious commodity. Reading about his age, I felt in disbelief as he always had the quickest wit and sharpest mind. His family, those I know, Jeanine (John) , Raymond Jr and Ethel, embodied his loving, kind, generous and ever humorous spirit. All of his wonderful staff mimicked his kindness and composure, even during the busiest of days. I cannot believe he is gone...and is not sitting behind his desk in suit and tie. His legacy lives on through his wonderful family and staff. I feel lucky to have known Dr. Dann. Thinking of you all.

Dr Dann will be missed! He was our family doctor, my husband had been his patient for more than 50 years.
Dr Dann's sense of humor it what I'll miss most, and his no-nonsense attitude. I will always remember telling him his suit was sharp, and his reply;
"I always wear a suit, even when I go swimming! "

Ethel and Family: We are saddened to hear of Ray's passing. Our friendship went a lot farther than Dr. to patient. He had such a wonderful sense of humor. We had so many wonderful conversations. When all of the "small talk" was done, he zeroed in on the reason for the office visit. What a sixth sense he had for solving a health problem! A HUGE heart and a caring attitude. We know that all of your family has a big legacy to pass on to everyone. Our love to all.
Respectfully,
Bill and Roberta Wetzell

Dr. Raymond Dann was a "one of a kind" mentor. He had great faith in my abilities to be a good Physician Assistant. Between Dr. Dann and his beautiful daughter and my dear friend, Rachel, my medical training was a wonderful experience ....filled with laughter and excellent teaching. I was honored that he placed the well being of his patients in my hands. I was blessed by this beautiful Renaissance Man of God and healer.
With much love and sorrow for Dr. Dann's beautiful family.

I first met him in fifth grade when his daughter Sara and I became friends. We are forever grateful for his support and friendship these past 34 years. I will never forget that He was instrumental in securing the medical professionals my father needed; and but for his lobbying, my Dad wouldn't be with us today. To all his family and family at the office, thank you for sharing him. All our love, Morales Family

Dr. Dann....was my Family doctor, my personal Doctor for 51 of my 59 years. He put stitches in my chin after a bicycle wreck when I was 8 years old. He has always been there for the Hickenbottom family in countless times of our lives. He did take such good care of us throughout my lifetime, it is just hard to believe he's gone. My family loved the man. I certainly did. Til we meet again Ray.......

Dr. Dann was one of those special physicians who, like the Energizer bunny, seems to keep going and going. It is hard to believe he won't be attending any more CALTCM meetings, which is where I first met him years ago. We quickly figured out that we both had Hungarian roots. He is an exemplar of the old saying "they just don't make 'em like they used to" and I suspect that he was an inspiration to many young clinicians. My condolences to all of his family and colleagues.

Dr. Dann became my family's doctor in 1963 soon after he opened his practice. People found it hard to believe that I had the same doctor for 54 years. He was more like family than a doctor. He saw me through some trying times and through the stages of my life. His humor was the best! I adored him and will miss him terribly. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Dr. Dann thank you for being a part of my life and now a special memory. You are missed. Brenda Woeckener May 10, 2017

I was very sorry to hear about Dr. Dann's passing. He was certainly one of my favorite doctors to call on when I was a long time pharmaceutical representative for Novartis Pharmaceuticals. I always enjoyed calling on the office and getting to know him and his wife, daughters, as best I could during my time in the office. I had always hoped to bring bagels to the office for him, Dr. Britton, and the staff as I sometimes used to while I was working, and now am more sad that I never got around to doing that after my early retirement from Novartis. He always brought a smile to my face and made my day a little brighter and happier by my visit. I will always remember my memories of calling on Dr. Dann and Dr. Britton with great happiness and very thankful that I had such good doctors as them to call on. I look forward to visiting again with him when I eventually see him in Heaven.

Without a doubt one of the most caring , giving persons I have known. A true friend and wonderful doctor he loved a good joke and always asked about other family members with sincere concern. He was our family doctor for over 20 years and we all will truly miss him. I know there was a very special place waiting for him in Heaven , And I hope he rests in peace.

Dr Dann has been our doctor for over 13 years. We were blessed having a doctor that was caring and down to earth. We always had his full attention to our concerns. He was also a good friend and so easy to talk to no matter what the concern. We will miss him very much and will never forget his kindness and right on diagnosis of our issues. Our prayers are with his family at this time of loss.

To the Dann family, our condolences, We will also look forward to the promised reserrection and a world where doctors will no longer be needed...however, friends and family will always be needed and in the coming paradise we will work side by side at creating a beautiful earth wide garden for all to enjoy! Until then, Dr. Dann will certainly be missed. He was my doctor since I was 13 years old...so the better part of 42 years. He was my babies doctor and tended them from birth. He will be missed. I know his office is feeling very sad with his loss, following the loss of another beloved doctor, Dr. Britton. Our families deepest condolences.

It is hard for me to express how much I thought of my Dr Dann. He was so caring and you could feel it just in the way he looked at you. He was my Dr for 30 years. I really thought the world of him. Being a nurse I had the privilege of caring for some of his patients. He was a incredible Dr. He got me through a hard time in my life as he did many patients. I could go on so I will end with a blessing for his family and want them to know my thoughts have been with them and he was a truly special man.

Our condolences go out to the family and staff of Dr. Dann. Dr. Dann has been our family's physician since the summer of 1963. Dr. Dann always made us feel like we had a family member as our family doctor. He was passionate about medicine, he was passionate about his patients, he was energetic, he was always fun, he loved his staff and was a great communicator. Dr. Dann went the extra mile for his patients. In our opinion Dr. Dann was not "one in a million" he was more like "one in ten million".

Dr. Dann was a wonderful doctor and it was a privilege to work with him for many years! A kind heart and an awesome physician combined in one man.
