Raymond Joseph Heningburg, Sr., was born on August 17, 1940. He peacefully departed this life at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Aline Heningburg; one sister, Pat Heningburg Johnson; and his beloved wife, Anne Heningburg.
He leaves to cherish his memory a loving daughter, Latonya Heningburg McCants, and devoted son, Raymond Joseph Heningburg II. He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Theresa Shipley and Billy Shipley.
His legacy continues through his grandchildren:
Ashley, Kenyata, and Brianna McCants, all Mobile, AL;
Leaster Marcel Powe of Mobile, AL;
Raymond (Christian) Heningburg III of Dallas, TX;
Keenan Robinson of Mobile, AL;
Raven, Rhea, Raylyn, and Chleo Noel Heningburg of Mobile, AL;
and Harmony Heningburg of Powder Springs, GA.
He is also survived by a host of great-grandchildren.
Raymond proudly served over 30 years with the Mobile Fire Department and was a founding member of the Progressive Black Firefighters - a pioneering group of African American firefighters in the region. After retiring from the fire department, he continued his dedication to service with over 20 years at Yellow Freight Trucking Company and additional time with Trailways Bus Company.
A lifelong resident of Mobile's historic community known as "The Bottom," particularly around Martin Luther King Avenue, Raymond was recognized as a "Lifetime Legend" for his dedication and service to his neighbors and community. Raymond will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
