Raymond Anton Ketterman was born May 20, 1936, in
Westphalia, Texas. He passed away on March 8, 2026, peacefully at his home in Temple, surrounded by his family, who cherished him so dearly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Temple with a burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Westphalia. Father John Guzaldo will officiate. A visitation will be held at Hewett-Arney Funeral Home Chapel in Temple from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16, with the Rosary starting at 7:00 p.m.
Raymond was born to Joseph and Mary (Rabroker) Ketterman in Westphalia as the 7th of 8 children. Nicknamed "Skeeter" as a youngster, Raymond fondly recalled his early years growing up alongside his siblings in their bungalow home in the countryside. As a young man at the age of 23, Raymond served his country in the Army Reserves, with six months of active duty service.
Not long after, Raymond chanced a date with Betty Jo Pechal in 1961, and love was never truer. Raymond and Betty were married on April 24, 1965, at the Church of the Visitation in Westphalia. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Shirley and Jo Ann. Along with their daughters, they made many memories enjoying dancing at local dance halls, and attending football and basketball games, especially supporting the Temple Wildcats. Raymond also took great pleasure in maintaining his yard with vibrant landscaping and seasonal decor over the years.
Raymond was employed at the Chupik Corporation for over 25 years. He then tried his hand at entrepreneurship with the family's Craft Consignment Shop and a few years later took on the role of church caretaker for St. Luke Catholic Church of which he was a founding parishioner. Partnering with Betty, the two faithfully led the pre-mass Rosary for many years. There were no things Raymond was more committed to than his Catholic faith, and his family.
Known affectionately to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Papo", there was nothing Raymond would stop short of to put a smile on their faces. "Papo" was often called on by his grandchildren to prepare breakfast as the chef, play all-time quarterback in the front yard, and participate in a surprise beauty pageant, and sometimes, all in the same day. Most importantly, he lived with an unmatchable kindness that will dearly be missed by all who had the opportunity of knowing him.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Lawrence, Alois, and Ervin Ketterman, sister, Sister Miriam Ketterman, one still born sister and son-in-law Michael Tuck.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Jo; his daughter Shirley Hannon and husband Mike; his daughter Jo Ann Hodges and husband Chris, all of Temple. He is also survived by his sister Angeline Gerick and brother Robert Ketterman, both of Temple. Raymond was deeply loved by his 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Luke Catholic Church, 2807 Oakdale Drive, Temple TX 76502, or a
charity of your choice.
Hewett-Arney Funeral Home of Temple is entrusted with these arrangements.
