Raymond McCarthy Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jul. 17, 2024.
Raymond Lester McCarthy, known affectionately as Ray (Butch) to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2024, in San Angelo, TX, due to Congestive Heart Failure. Born in Hartford, CT, on April 20, 1938, Ray's life journey was marked by his generous spirit, sharp intelligence, and courageous heart.
Ray spent his formative years in Hartford, where he attended high school before proudly serving his country in the Air Force. After his military service, he embarked on a successful career that culminated in his role as Vice President of Operations. Ray's professional achievements were paralleled by his active involvement in community associations, where his leadership and commitment to service were greatly valued.
Family was the cornerstone of Ray's life. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Judith Hanson McCarthy of 64 years, and a loving brother to George McCarthy and wife Rebecca. Ray's legacy includes his three children, Sherri Faulkner (Lubbock, TX), Cindy Collins (Niantic, CT), and his son, Raymond (Skip) McCarthy and wife, Jeannie (Montpelier, VA). He was grandfather to Timmy and Danielle Klapproth (Enfield, CT), Anissa and Christopher Kenworthy (Wallingford, CT), Lea and Aaron Heinzel (Hamilton Square, NJ), Amy and Mathew Burzdak (Somers, CT), Patrick and Savannah Faulkner (Midland, TX), Holly and Caleb Gold (Lubbock, TX), Peyton McCarthy (Montpelier, VA), Dylan McCarthy (Somers, CT), Maris Pelkey (Cheshire, CT), and Seadon Faulkner (Ocean Springs, MS) and 21 great grandchildren. Each of them cherished their time with Ray, who imparted wisdom and joy in their lives.
Outside of work and family, Ray had a passion for helping young people grow and succeed. He was an enthusiastic baseball coach and an active member of the Boy Scouts, where he influenced many lives. His love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies, which included gardening, camping, and traveling. Ray's zest for life and his ability to nurture growth, both in his garden and in the hearts of those he coached and mentored, were truly remarkable.
Those who knew Ray would describe him as a man of great character. Generosity was second nature to him; he gave freely of his time and resources, always aiming to lift others up. His intelligence shone through in his problem-solving abilities and strong work ethic. Courage was a defining trait of Ray's, not only in his youth serving his country but also in facing life's challenges with unwavering strength and resilience.
Ray's departure leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment, and service. He will be remembered as a pillar of the community, a beacon of support for his family, and a friend to all fortunate enough to have crossed his path. As we bid farewell to Raymond Lester McCarthy, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey filled with purpose, and a man who made the world a better place by simply being in it.
Let us honor Ray's memory by embracing the qualities he exemplified: generosity, intelligence, and courage. He was a man who truly made a difference, and while he will be deeply missed, the impact of his life's work and the memories shared will continue to inspire and comfort all who knew him.
Memorial Service will be Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 11:00am at Southland Baptist Church, 4300 Meadow Creek Trail in San Angelo, TX 76904. Military Honors 11:15 to 11:30.
