RD Gatton, 85, a cherished figure in his Harmony community, was born on December 30, 1940, in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. He passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 4, 2026.
RD dedicated many years of his life to his profession as an electrician, where he was known for his generosity in helping many members of the community fix things for little or no cost. His commitment to service extended beyond his trade, as he also served with the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department for several years. RD was a beloved member of Harmony Baptist Church and he also loved Harmony Methodist Church, reflecting his spirit of inclusivity and community.
In addition to his career and community service, RD had a vibrant personality that brought joy to those around him. He loved people and was known for his huge smile, playful sense of humor, and love for fun. His hobbies included attending auctions, estate sales, flea markets, and thrift stores, where he found joy as a collector of many things. He was a devoted fan and "groupie" of the Christian group "Solid Rock" of Union Grove, demonstrating his passion for music and fellowship.
RD is survived by his son, Perry Gatton; his daughter, Lori Childress (Matt); his grandson, Ryan Underwood; two brothers, Jamie Gatton (Suan) and Dan Gatton (Nora); a sister, Edith Girard, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Milton Gatton (Viola); his mother and stepfather, Thelma Jackson Lambert (Junior); his beloved wife, Lavonne Dobson Gatton; and two brothers, Pete Gatton and John Gatton.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Harmony Baptist Church, where both churches will come together to honor him, featuring a combined choir and remarks from both Rev. Chris Lakey and Rev. Jacob Scott. Burial will follow in the Harmony Town Cemetery with his body being escorted by the Harmony Volunteer Fire Department. The family will visit with friends from 9:00 am to 10:45 am in the Life Center at Harmony Baptist Church prior to the service.
Special thanks to Dr. Jose Perez and the staff at Piedmont Pulmonology, Dr. Bradley Martin and staff at Statesville Cardiovascular Clinic, and the entire staff at Harmony Medical Center for the love and care given to RD over the years. And to his "endo girls" at Iredell Memorial Hospital, your love for "Daddy" was more special to him than you will ever know.
RD Gatton leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and service. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Nicholson Funeral Home is honored to serve the Gatton family.
