We are saddened to announce the passing of Rebecca "Becky" May Hawley. Born on November 11th, 1955, in
Moscow, Idaho, Becky spent her childhood in the shadow of the Tetons on her family's farm in the Idaho Falls area. A graduate of the University of Moscow, Becky employed her Biology Degree serving the people of Greater Idaho at St. Luke's, where she eventually became the Executive Administrator at St Luke's hospital and Mountain States Tumor Institute. When she retired in 2021, she continued to help people volunteering at the American Red Cross.
Beyond her career, Becky cultivated many hobbies. An avid reader, her Boise homes were lined with old dog-eared books, and she wouldn't shy away from asking if she could borrow whatever you were reading when you were done. When not reading, she was often in her hulk action figure lined living room, knitting, crocheting , or sewing - always creating something cozy for her friends and family.
While she lived in Boise, she could be found often in San Francisco, rooting her Giants to victory (or, more often, commiserating with fans over losses). And her strong opinions did not end at Home Plate: she was avidly political, a fighter for Woman's rights and other progressive causes. Her erudite arguments led nearly everyone she met to note that she was "one of the smartest people I have ever met."
Becky took peace in the maundaine and ordinary. Her plant-filled Boise condo backed into a small creek where she was devoted to what she called "my wild kingdom." She passed her days taking care of the ducklings and squirrels as the snow thawed while collecting bird related memorabilia . In fact, her nickname "Birdie"was partially apt; to make a pun she would groan at, collecting bird related things was her calling.
The oldest of four siblings, Becky is survived by a younger brother, Briggs, a younger sister, Mary, brother in law, Steve, and sister in law Jetta. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Clyde and Mary Joyce Hawley, a younger brother, James, and a brother in law, Michael. She was a devoted aunt to her "brownies" and "blondies;" a nick name she cleverly coined for her brunette neices from James and Jetta, and the blondies of Mary and Steve.
Becky passed away peacefully on the 18th of February of 2026 with family and friends surrounding her. We will remember her for her wit and intelligence, for her passion and commitment, for her independence and strength. But above all, we will remember Becky as she was: unapologetically herself.
