Rebecca Christine Mack, 41, of Upper Marlboro, MD, passed away on August 20, 2024, due to complications of RSV. Born on May 11, 1983, Rebecca had Down Syndrome and a myriad of medical issues as a result. Her will to live was incredible. With a predicted life expectancy of only 10 months, Rebecca fought through 15 separate medical challenges and setbacks to become not just a wonderful young woman, but a beautiful soul. She touched hundreds of lives in the community as the perfect representative of how much an individual with Special Needs can accomplish if given the opportunity.
In our local area, Rebecca spearheaded the introduction of special needs persons in the Girl Scouts. She was involved with the Girl Scouts from the age of 5 until she was 21, demonstrating that with the right support, those with special needs could learn, have fun and represent their community as well as their peers could. At the age of 21, Rebecca “flew out” on her own, and joined a Group home under the supervision of The Arc of Prince George’s County, Maryland. It did not take long for the house staff to become Rebecca’s second family. Her individual growth blossomed, and she was able to hold down a job with The Arc. She embraced her passions for traveling, dancing, and singing, especially anything Disney, which brought joy not only to her but to everyone around her. Rebecca was also well known and loved not just at home but throughout The Arc for her fun-loving nature, constant smile, polite demeanor, and especially mischievous antics.
She is survived by her father, Robert W. Mack Jr. (Margaret E. Pagano), Kingston, TN; her mother, Ruth D. Remmers, Louisville, TN; her sister, Deborah E. Mack (Josh Welker), Williamsburg, VA; two nieces, Ava and Nadia Welker, (Williamsburg, VA), and numerous aunts and uncles. Rebecca was a cherished member of her family, and her presence will be deeply missed by her loved ones and all who knew her.
