Reginald Ray McElroy, 79, of Owensboro, died Friday, August 7, 2015 at the Carmel Home. He was born in Daviess County to the late Orville M. and Hazel Boyle McElroy.
Ray was a US Army Veteran. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years of service. While there he served as Steward of the local APW Union for several years. Ray was a very active 50 year member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where he volunteered in many capacities. He was also widely known for his many years of faithful and outstanding service in the Daviess County Lions Club.
He and his wife, Bonnie Sue, enjoyed traveling, especially on trains. They were frequent visitors of Disney World (14 visits) and the Grand Ole' Opry (27 visits). They also enjoyed square dancing and in their early years they were members of a dancing group known as "Odds and Ends". He enjoyed U.K. Basketball, eating out and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Sue McElroy in 2012; a sister, Phyllis Trodglen-McCullum; and a brother, Jerry McElroy.
He is survived by daughters, Cindy Sue Wilkerson( fiance' Mike Heep) of Owensboro and Krista Faye Niehaus (Jason) of Owensboro; a son, Clifford Ray McElroy (Veronica Golden) of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Logan Wilkerson, Savannah Wilkerson, Madeline McElroy, Carter Hoagland, Lillian Hoagland, Kirk Niehaus and Nathan Heep; a sister, Pam Crawford of Owensboro; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral mass will be at 10 AM Tuesday, August 11 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Entombment will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3-8 PM , with prayers at 7 PM, and after 9 AM Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to Daviess County Lions Club c/o Greg Mills, Treasurer, 2945 Free Silver Road, Lewisport, KY 42351.
