Rene Rodriguez Sr. passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 18th, 2023. Rene was born on May 21st, 1950, to Noe and Imelda (Peña) Rodriguez.
Rene loved his community and the Weslaco Independent School District. He strived to improve Weslaco by campaigning for political candidates and attending school board meetings.
Rene worked hard all his life to provide for his family. He worked at Weslaco Cash and Carry and Central Plumbing & Electric for many years. Later, Rene joined Weslaco ISD as the district’s locksmith, retiring after fifteen years. He continued serving his community and his family until he became sick.
When Rene wasn’t working, he was an outdoor enthusiast. He loved hunting birds, deer, quail, and hogs and enjoying nature with friends.
Rene was a jack of all trades and enjoyed working on his motorcycles and riding them. He was also a talented musician and played the electric keyboard and guitar. He was a member of the band Smudge for many years.
Rene also loved football and the barbecue and party that accompanied game day. His favorite team was the Washington Redskins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Noe and Imelda Rodriguez, daughter Melva Rodriguez, and son Rene Rodriguez Jr.
Rene is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Rodriguez, daughter Brenda Rodriguez, son Steven Rodriguez, granddaughter Samara Rodriguez and brother Noe Rodriguez Jr.
A viewing will be held at McCaleb Funeral Home on Friday, April 21st, with burial to follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens on Saturday, April 22nd, at 10 am. Family, friends, and neighbors are invited to pay their last respects.
