Fr. Joseph A. Seiter, C.S.Sp. of Bethel Park, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, died peacefully Saturday, September 2 nd at Libermann Hall, Bethel Park PA, at the age of 87. Father Seiter was born February 25, 1936 in Morrison Bluff, AR. He professed his vows as a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit on August 22, 1957 at Holy Ghost Novitiate in Ridgefield, CT and was ordained to the Priesthood June 6, 1962 at St. Mary’s Seminary, Ferndale in Norwalk CT.
Fr. Seiter’s was first appointed to East Africa in the District of Kilimanjaro and ministered there for twenty years. Upon returning to the States, he served at St. Joseph’s Parish Bay City; St. Joseph’s Hospital, Houston TX; Our Lady of the Valley in Hemet CA and the South Texas Medical Center in San Antonio TX. In succeeding years, he was pastor of Sacred Heart in Morrilton, AR
and at St. Rose of Lima in Carlisle AR and the mission of Holy Trinity in England, AR. He was assistant pastor of Immaculate Conception in Ft. Smith AR and then St. Joseph Church in Conway, AR. He obtained retirement status in 2009 and was in residence at Libermann Hall, the Spiritan Retirement Center in Bethel Park PA.
Fr. Seiter was preceded in death by his parents Charles J. and Mary Ann Enderlin Seiter, his brother, Larry Seiter and sister, Martha McNeil. He is survived by his sister Barbara Ketchenside of Conway AR, nieces, nephews and extended family members.
There will be visitation in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel at the Spiritan Center, 6230 Brush Run Road, Bethel Park Thursday September 7 th at 10:00 a.m. with the Funeral Mass being celebrated at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at the Spiritan Cemetery section of St. Mary’s Cemetery Sharpsburg.
In memory of Fr. Seiter donations may be made to the Congregation of the Holy Spirit designated for retirement or for the educations of future Holy Spirit Fathers and Brothers 6230 Brush Run Road, Bethel Park PA 15102. Arrangements entrusted to SLATER FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES OF SHARPSBURG (412-782-2211).
