Me and some friends in San Francisco were highly influenced by Spinal Tap . We formed a band and came up with a gimmick , like all bands do ,and we decided that we would be the only band in history that refused to play a note , under any circumstance . We called it " Silence ".... " Roots grunge " . I remember the record guy coming to see us once and he said he loved our stuff but he wasn't sure he could sell a record with no music on it . I told him , man , you've been doing that all years , and he fronted us 1.3 mil on the spot . We ended up doing an acoustic gig at the Warfield and got up there on stage and refused to play the acoustic versions of the electrical songs we refused to play in the first place , and then we smashed our instruments .
