Clock Funeral Home & Cremation Services - MuskegonRichard "Lefty" Harold Backer, age 99, of Muskegon, MI, peacefully passed from this life on January 20, 2026. Born on March 28, 1926, in Muskegon to Harold and Theadora (Dobson) Backer, Lefty was celebrated for his vibrant spirit and zest for life. He graduated from Muskegon High School, where he earned the affectionate nickname "Lefty" as a talented pitcher on the baseball team.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Lefty served proudly as a Medic during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning home, he married the love of his life, June "Windy" Daigle, on May 28, 1949. Lefty's dedication to hard work led him to a fulfilling 38-year career as an over-the-road truck driver with Holland Motor Express, where he was well-respected by colleagues and friends alike.
Lefty's life was marked by love, adventure, and service. He was a past member of Temple United Methodist Church and later attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Windy. Together, they embarked on wonderful journeys, visiting places like Hawaii and Las Vegas, and cherished winter months in Florida during their retirement. Lefty found joy in tending to his garden, spending time with friends at the "Club House," where laughter and camaraderie flourished over a few beers.
Lefty took great pride in participating in the Veteran Legends Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2014, where he honored his fellow service members at the WWII memorial. And now Lefty, the old soldier, has gone home to rest.
Lefty is survived by his beloved son, Thomas Backer; grandson, Tony Backer; great-grandchildren, Taja Backer, Tommy Backer Jr., and Blayne Backer; and great-great-grandchildren, Kole and Kaylynn. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, June "Windy" Backer, in 2020; grandson Tommy Backer; daughter-in-law Elaine Backer; sister Betty Ohs; and brother Lee Dobson.
A cherished celebration of Lefty's life will take place on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Clock Funeral Home, with a reception to follow. His interment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery. All are invited to gather and share in the joy of Lefty's remarkable life.
