Richard Alan Bates, age 76, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on March 7, 2026.
Richard was born on December 24, 1949, in Carrollton, Georgia, to the late Jewell and Doris Bates. He spent most of his life in Carrollton, where he built a reputation as a hardworking and skilled carpenter, a trade he took great pride in throughout his life.
Richard honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973, serving aboard the USS Enterprise. His time in the Navy was a meaningful part of his life, and he carried a deep respect for service and country thereafter.
Outside of work, Richard loved spending time outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being in nature, and had a strong interest in Native American culture. Above all, he cherished his family and the time spent with them. Richard was also a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Susan Bates; his daughters, Julie Eckert and Lisa Bush; his grandchildren, Shiloh Eckert (Carlee), Hunter Eckert, and Bates Bush (Kamille Pratt); and his great-grandchildren, Cohen, Claire and Colten Eckert. He is also survived by his siblings, Steve Bates, Lawana and Hurtis Jones, along with many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jewell and Doris Bates, and his beloved son-in-law, Bill Bush.
In accordance with Richard’s wishes, he will be cremated by Jones-Wynn Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors at Holy Ground Baptist Church on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM, with a short service immediately following. Pastor Kelly Runels and Brother Case Shadinger will be officiating.
Flowers for the visitation may be sent to Holy Ground Baptist Church.
