Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and CrematoryRichard L. Berger, 85, of Fremont, OH passed away unexpectedly on November 15, 2025. His family and friends are left to remember his memory and navigate the sudden grief and loss.
Richard, known to many as “Dick”, was born on December 20, 1939 in Vickery, OH the son of Nelson and Helen (Stokes) Berger. He married Barbara Oakleaf on October 17, 1956 and together they recently celebrated sixty-nine years of marriage.
Dick worked at Crown Rubber (Ludlow Composites) for many years until he retired. Outside of work, he had a passion for pony pulling and earned numerous awards at county fairs. He and Barb enjoyed visiting Amish Country. He was an avid sports fan who loved attending athletic events and spent years coaching baseball teams for his sons. Dick was truly one of a kind, known for his humor and generous spirt.
Together, Dick and Barb were deeply committed to their community. They supported organizations such as the Sandusky County Communities Foundation, Sandusky County Habitat for Humanity, Lindsey Volunteer Fire Department, and local schools. They treated countless athletic teams to meals and snacks, funded scholarships, and stayed connected with many high school and college athletes beyond their time in athletics.
Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara Berger; sons, Roger Berger, Ron (Kathy Gegorski) Berger, and Dan (Chris Beeker) Berger; daughter-in-law, Chris (Kosman) Berger; sister, Carol Gage; grandchildren, Geoff (Sarah Grupp), Andy, Sandy and Justin Berger, Stephanie (Josh) Durairaj, Kayti Berger, Carson (Kylee) Berger; great grandchildren, Nicko, Caleb, Layla and Elie Berger, Teghan Schneider, Kayd Berger, Royce Faulds, Irysa Berger, Sophia and Zoe Durairaj.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Doug Berger; grandson, Tony Berger; siblings, Nelson Berger Jr., David Berger, Doris Miller, Evelyn Hoffman, Ruth Watson and Phyllis Nitschke.
A memorial visitation will take place on Friday, November 28, 2025 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E State St., Fremont, OH.
In lieu of flowers and gifts memorials can be made to Sandusky County Communities Foundation, Sandusky County Habitat for Humanity or Heartland Hospice.
