New Englanders all remember where we were 24 years ago when our beloved New England Patriots won their first super bowl! I was with Richard Capra & his friend Maureen at the Bourne VFW to watch the big game! Of course, we all remember we were not favored to win that super bowl. Nobody gave us a chance! Yet we shocked everyone winning in the final seconds!!! At that point I had known Richard for about 3 & a half years...first meeting him, his mom Edith, & brother Danny - late summer of 1999. My over quarter century friendship with Richard resembles that first Patriots super bowl win... as Richard was so often underestimated as were those 2001 Patriots!
As our friendship grew, I saw so much brilliance, humor & loyalty Richard shared with those around him! Richard was indeed the most unique person I've ever known! His knowledge of history & recall of dates was nothing short of remarkable! Richard loved helping others! He assisted several of my political campaigns...some successful some failed. Richard was always optimistic & enthusiastic! I'm eternally grateful for his support & time he devoted to our cause. I will sorely miss our fascinating conversations. Richard & I spent much time together after his beloved mom Edith passed... I'm glad I was there to be supportive... just as Richard was when my mom passed. My mom really liked Richard! He enjoyed learning about her native Berlin, Germany & many meals she prepared for us both! We enjoyed one of those fish dinners as the Pats beat the Raiders on that snowy day in Foxboro to win playoffs propelling them to that winning super bowl 24 years ago! Many other Patriots super bowls we won I spent with Richard! Plus, that first one we lost to the Giants...we were together! We were both loyal & enthusiastic Pats fans!
So, ironically, I just learned last night when I called Cape Winds... & spoke with Mr. Fraser that Richard had passed away. I was deeply saddened. It was only several months ago I visited him at Cape Winds & he was doing okay! I wish I had visited & called more frequently. However, we did always stay in touch with him calling or my visits. I do cherish an immense amount of time we had together while he was still living in Hyannis & when I set him up (as his realtor) at his cozy apartment on Craigville Beach Road, Centerville. Richard loved walking over to Craigville Pizza & Mexican! The staff adored him... "Shannon" a server would ask me about him years after he moved to Sandwich! He left a distinct impression on all who knew him! "Carol" at the old Craigville General Store loved her frequent chats...
So, my old friend... we come full circle... I called you last night to talk about our beloved Patriots back in the super bowl!!! Like that first one we saw together... we're the underdogs again... only that one & this one.
I had been looking forward to your historical facts... recall of scores of super bowls of long ago! I was eager to reminisce over our 1st one together with your friend Maureen, or when you & Janusz were in my living room - (sitting on that used red couch you & I moved) - watching the greatest super bowl comeback ever...beating the Atlanta Falcons! Matter of fact... my dear old friend, Richard - I'm going to put that Pats vs. Falcons shirt on now... since you & I were the only optimists that we'd win that game even down by 23! Overcoming all the odds... that is what I think about... Richard! Rest in peace my dear friend! God bless!
My sincere condolences to brothers, Doug & Gerald, Cousin Ken & family.
