Richard R. Carroll, beloved husband and father departed this world on October 21st, 2025.
Surviving him are his wife of 64 years, Sonia (nee Osborn) and daughters Anastasia Carroll Benton and Lauren Carroll. Preceding him in death is his brother Kenneth.
Born on November 21st, 1930 in rural Ohio, he came by his ethic of hard work naturally, working on the family farm and in their store in Chardon. He particularly enjoyed maple syrup time.
Electronics and audio fascinated him; he built radios and repaired equipment in his teens. His home always boasted an amazing entertainment system. This talent led to a focus on electrical engineering at Fenn College and a career at General Electric then Lucas Machine where he reached the position of vice president.
He loved music, taking up the trombone in his youth and playing throughout his life with a number of groups: the Geauga County Fair Band, Chardon Rube Band, Tri C Orchestra, Madison Jazz Project and others.
He served in the Army in various locations across Europe.
Richard flew small planes. His first was the Bonanza, which he flew across the country with Sonia and toured over Ohio with his daughters, challenging them to see their home from a different perspective.
He appreciated early American craftsmanship, frequenting antique shops and auctions in search of furniture to restore. A fine woodworker, he could reproduce a missing leg or handle indistinguishable from the original.
On weekends when he wasn't flying, he played golf.
Richard and Sonia acquired an unfinished house and lived in it while he did much of the completion himself, including the creation of an entire stair rail and balusters from wood already on hand.
His latter years were enriched by two cats: Flash and Duncan. We know he would be happy to be reunited with these boys so dear to his heart.
His family and friends will miss this man of many interests, his dry wit, and his waffles always.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, November 30th from 3-6pm. For details and to RSVP, please contact the family or email
