Richard Carter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Norton, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home - Framingham on Nov. 26, 2025.
Richard W. Carter, 91, a lifelong resident of Framingham, died Monday, November 24, 2025 after a period of declining health. Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Edward W. & Margaret (Brillhart) Carter, and the beloved husband of Carol A. (Messana) Carter.

Richard attended Framingham Public Schools where he was a standout athlete in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track. He went on to attend Cushing Academy and Northeastern University. Richard was drafted by the NY Yankees to play in their minor league system and did so for 6 years. He served his country proudly in the United States Army.

In 1961 Richard married the love of his life, Carol, and together they raised their children in Framingham. He worked for Hewlett Packard (formerly Digital Corp) for many years before taking an early retirement. He went on to work as a clerk for the Framingham Courthouse until his retirement in 2017. Richard remained an avid sports fan particularly baseball and basketball and was inducted into the Framingham High School Hall of Fame in 2019.

After retiring from baseball, Richard continued his involvement in sports, officiating both basketball and football for over 30 years.

Richard took pride in maintaining his yard. He loved spending time with and travelling with his wife Carol and sister-in-law Mary. He never went anywhere that he didn't seem to run into someone he knew, even when travelling abroad. He found enjoyment in reading the Sunday paper, especially the sports pages cover to cover.

Along with his wife Carol, Richard is survived by his children, Daryl Carter & his wife Camilla (Bruni) of Milford, and Kelly (Carter) Barnes & her husband Randy of Chugiak AK , his five grandchildren, Scott Carter & his wife Megan, Kristen Carter & her fiancé Andrew Dreebin, Nicholas Barnes & his wife Jade, Cody Barnes & his wife Hanna, and Hailey Barnes, his 5 great grandchildren, Bella, Colter, Cane, and Nora Barnes, and Colton Carter, and several special nieces and nephews. His brothers Robert and Bruce predeceased him.

Family and friends are invited to honor and remember Richard's life by gathering for visiting hours in the Norton, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 53 Beech Street, Framingham on Tuesday, December 2nd from 4-7PM.
