Richard Cooley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ferry Funeral Home on Jan. 19, 2026.
Richard LeRoy Cooley, 85, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at his home in Nevada, MO. Richard was born in Kanosh, Utah on August 12th, 1940 to Edna Lucille (Barney) and Anthon LeRoy Cooley. He married Leah Tryon on June 27, 1968 in Mesa, Arizona and she survives of the home.

Richard was born with a wandering spirit which took him all over the countryside until his dad put him to work at age 5. He graduated from high school in 1958 as a Utah State wrestling champion. He later served a church mission after a short stint in the military. Many years later he was recognized for inventing the fireman's carry wrestling hold, but his greatest achievement was raising his family of eight children.

Richard was a man of many talents and a broad variety of occupations. Richard served his country in the United State Air Force for three years. He was an electrical contractor/electrician; served as a police officer in Reno, NV; was a Master Barber; and was a security officer before his retirement. He often volunteered his time in many ways, including as a barber on the mission field Richard also fostered several kids. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His favorite hobby and passion was to make people happy and to laugh.

He is survived by his wife, eight children, twenty-four grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 19, 2026, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Dr. Brandon Sohm officiating. Burial will follow in Newton Burial Park.
