I just sent an email to Dr. Friedmans inbox requesting his advice for a Dr. Referral now to treat my nephew and was so so saddened to then by chance see the NYT notice of his passing. I am still weeping now as I was his patient for many years and what he did for me was invaluable. I could not begin to thank him enough for his kind brilliance. Last year, I just wanted to thank him and I sent him a long, appreciative and loving email telling him what he did for me and how I have such a happy life with my wife and no anxiety either- all thanks to Dr. Friedman. He graciously emailed me back a lovely note so I know I did put a big smile on his lovely face. My sincere sympathies to his wife, son and daughters as he was a very special man and doctor and he was taken from you - and all of us- way too soon.

Dr. Friedman was a traditionalist who questioned the status quo. He upheld the best of old world verities while holding the line against the unseemly bigotry the times. He carried is considerable accomplishments with the quiet grace of someone who knew what it was to work his way up from humble beginnings. He knew what it was to be a mentor, scholar and renowned professor. At the same time he never forgot what it was like to be a student who paid the bills thru playing music or an army functionary. He was a great listener who instinctively filtered out the noise. It is not surprising he made his mark by standing up for those who were marginalized. He wasnt interested in being a hero, but simply telling the truth. Thanks for your wonderful example of a life well lived. We will remember your grace and dignity, especially in these difficult times. My condolences to the family.

I just wanted to say that he is remembered as long ago as when he was chief resident at PI, when he made a big impression on me. I continue to be impacted by his memory. Simply put, I felt like he was one of the very few who connected with me. I am very thankful to him for that.

Dr Friedman was a memorable figure from my 18 months at Columbia Presbyterian. I was enthralled by him, and often wondered what he was doing now. May his memory live on.
