Richard J. Gladdys

Richard Julian Gladdys, of Plymouth, Massachusetts, died at home on Sunday, July 13, 2025. He was 74.
Born on February 21, 1951, in Branford, Connecticut, Richard was the beloved son of Benjamin and Evalyn (Zdanowicz) Gladdys. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Georgiana (Tweed), his son Benjamin Gladdys, daughter Marcy Carpenter, sister Paula Gladdys and cherished grandchildren Sophora and Linden Carpenter. Predeceased by brother Robert Gladdys.
Richard grew up in Branford, attending local schools before graduating from Notre Dame High School in West Haven. He went on to earn a degree in literature from Bard College and pursued graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
In 1976, Richard married Georgiana, and the couple settled in Conway, Massachusetts, where they raised their two children in a home nestled along a quiet river. Later, they moved to Plymouth, where Richard worked for several large construction firms as a Director of Business Development. A civic-minded man, he served the town of Plymouth for many years on the Finance Committee.
A lifelong lover of language and ideas, Richard was a passionate writer who filled volumes with poetry, short stories, and plays. In 2024, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by publishing his poetry collection, Notes from the Sargasso Sea-a deeply personal accomplishment that reflected his courage, perseverance, and literary spirit.
Richard found great peace and inspiration in the natural world. He was drawn to the water-rivers, lakes, the ocean-and spent hours boating, fishing, and simply being near its ever-changing rhythms. He loved his family deeply, and his wit, and wisdom left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held in Plymouth at a later date. Details will be announced.
