Richard Golladay Obituary

Published by Legacy on Feb. 27, 2026.
Richard Terrence Golladay, Sr., age 83, of Knotts Island, NC, passed away on February 22, 2026.

Born on February 13, 1943, in Harrisonburg, VA, he was the son of Ralph Jacob Golladay, Sr. and Helone Harlow Grimes. He was affectionately known by many names-Terry, Dad, Dickie, Dick, Grandpa, Gramp, Papa, Mr. G, and Uncle Dick-each one a reflection of the special place he held in the hearts of those who knew him. One of his favorite sayings, "can't never did nothing," became a guiding reminder of his grit, determination, and belief in perseverance.

Richard proudly served in the United States Navy for 26 years, where he attained the distinguished rank of Senior Chief Golladay. After retiring from the Navy in 1997, he took to the open road as a truck driver for Givens Trucking. He later continued his service to the nation as a government contractor, applying the expertise he gained during his years in uniform. In his later years, Richard became a beloved presence at Knotts Island Elementary School. As a school bus driver, he transported students with the same care and vigilance he brought to every chapter of his life. He went on to serve as a custodian for the school – work he carried out with pride, dedication, and a warm smile.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Jacqueline – his "sweetie"; his children Georgia (John), Richard, Jr., Wanda (Zack), Robert, and Theresa (Ben); his nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; his brothers Dennis (Mamie) and David (Ski); and his sister Judith. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Jacob Golladay, Sr.; his mother, Helone Harlow Grimes; and his brother, Ralph Jacob Golladay, Jr.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his devoted care aides, Jennifer and Yvonne, and to his hospice nurses, Kathy and Ashley, for the love, compassion, and gentle support they provided over the past eight months.

A service with military honors will be held at Family Choice Funerals & Cremations, 5401 Indian River Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23464, on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dementia Society of America or the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society.
