Richard Helser, Obituary

Richard W. Helser Sr. passed away peacefully on April 26, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 22, 1953, in Columbus, Ohio, he was preceded in death by his father, Robert Helser; his mother, Lana Helser; his brother, Robert Beavers; and his son, Joseph Helser.

Richard is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cynthia Helser; his son Richard (Sarah) Helser Jr.; his daughter Connie (Jason) Fuoco; and his beloved granddaughter, Chloe Helser.

During his 23 years in the United States Army, he traveled the world in service to the nation he was immensely proud to represent. He lived by Army values: work hard, stand strong, and show up when others need you - a code he carried with him throughout his life, including in his years of public service with the United States Postal Service, where he retired in 2015.

After relocating to Savannah, Georgia, he found a new way to contribute to his community as a crossing guard for a local elementary school. He took pride in this role and became a familiar, friendly figure to students and neighbors alike.

Richard lived by principles of quiet service, discipline, and hard work. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic and a lifelong commitment to serving others. He will be remembered with deep respect, enduring gratitude, and love.

"A life spent in service to others is a life well-lived and well-remembered."

Per his request, private funeral arrangements have been made through Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors. He will be honored with a military service and interment at a national cemetery at a later date.

To honor Richard's memory, donations may be made in his name to the American Lung Association to support lung cancer research and advocacy.

So sorry for your loss, I only knew him as our school crossing guard/traffic control. Which he was wonderful at. We will miss seeing him. Prayers for the family, May He Rest In Peace.

Richard was my Carpool buddy. He was an amazing man and my friend. No one coukd take his place as a crossing guard. When he left a Lot of parents left the line because they didn't feel safe. He made you feel safe always.
