Richard Hensch Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vander Plaat Funeral Home - Wyckoff on Mar. 2, 2026.
Richard Hensch, 86, of Mahwah, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026. Born on
September 11, 1939, he was the beloved son of the late Alfred and Margaret Hensch.
Richard was raised in East Rutherford and graduated from East Rutherford High
School, where he played high school basketball. He went on to attend Lehigh
University, earning a degree in Civil Engineering and competing as a member of the
university's track team.

Richard built a distinguished career with both Buck, Seifert & Jost and United Water
Company (UWR). He capped off his career as the Vice President of Engineering at
UWR. During his tenure, he helped design and build the first ozone water treatment
system in the US, contributing to advancements in water quality and infrastructure.
A man deeply committed to his community; Richard volunteered as an EMT with
Mahwah's Company #4 Ambulance Corps and most recently served as Treasurer of AU
(Activities Unlimited) Men's Club. He generously gave his time coaching Little League
baseball, as well as youth football, impacting countless young athletes with his steady
guidance and encouragement.

Richard was an avid reader and a passionate sports fan who loved watching just about
any sport. Yet nothing brought him greater joy than cheering on his children and
grandchildren-he never missed a game. He was a talented woodworker and enjoyed
sketching, gardening, and traveling the world with his beloved wife of 62 years, Joyce,
whom he met on a blind date. Together, they built a life centered on love, laughter, and
family.

A devoted family man and master of the backyard BBQ, Richard also enjoyed dining out
and trying new foods. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; his three children,
Kathlene Szoka (husband Michael Szoka), Douglas Hensch, and Susan Ludwig
(husband Tony Ludwig); and his six cherished grandchildren: Brad Szoka (wife Brittney
Szoka), Maddie Szoka, Nicholas Hensch, Zachary Hensch, Carly Ludwig, and Anna
Ludwig. He was especially proud to recently welcome his great-granddaughter, Lainey,
daughter of Brad and Brittney.

Richard's legacy of devotion, integrity, and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of all
who knew and loved him.
