Richard Marvin Herbstreith

Richard Marvin Herbstreith, age 89, of Hastings, passed away on December 11, 2025. He was born on October 14, 1936, in Dowling, Michigan, the son of Hale and Anna (Hiher) Herbstreith.

Richard worked as a heavy equipment operator for the City of Hastings, where he retired following 35 years of service. On February 24, 1968, he married Nancy (Hoaglin) Herbstreith, and together they shared 55 wonderful years until her passing in 2023. She was the love of his life, his world, and he cherished her deeply every single day.

Richard enjoyed simple pleasures like fishing, watching over his wild birds, and caring for his yard. He was the kind of neighbor who was always ready to help, whether it meant plowing snow or resurfacing a driveway. Those everyday acts of kindness showed just how much he cared about the people around him and the community he called home.  His Yorkie, Angel, was a great joy to him the last year of his life. 

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Nancy Marie Herbstreith; his grandson, Donnell Rowe; his brothers, Robert, Leon and Jack Herbstreith; his sisters, Marie Henge, Betty Storm and Gail Wallace; and his beloved Yorkies, Precious and Cherish.  

He is survived by his children Janine (Ricky) Rowe, Annette (Perry) Raab, Lashell (Bobby) Thomas, and John (Liliana) Herbstreith; grandchildren Cassie Smith, DiAnthony Sweet, Brandon Rowe, Caleb Hall, Ariel Gallagher, Jaxson Gallagher, Janessa Thomas, Roman Herbstreith, and Elysium Herbstreith; his brother Harry Herbstreith; his sister Dorothy Service; and his Yorkie fur baby, Angel.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 19, 2025 at Noon with a Funeral Service to follow at 1:00 PM at Girrbach Funeral Home, 328 S Broadway; Hastings, MI 49058. Interment will follow at Dowling Cemetery.
