Richard Bernhard Hoiberg was born on July 28, 1952 in Salinas, CA. A funny story about his birth is that while his mom was pregnant, she went to a doctor to confirm her pregnancy. The doctor told her that she was not pregnant. He said that it was only a gall stone. She went to another doctor and after a few months gave birth to Rick. She sent an announcement to her first doctor which stated that she gave birth to her gallstone. He weighed 7 lbs. 7 oz., 20 inches in length, and was named Richard. Rick would be the oldest brother to his younger brothers Ronald and Robert Hoiberg.
Rick attended elementary school, junior high school, and part of high school in Salinas, California. He graduated in 1970 from Carmel High School in Carmel, California.
Rick joined the U.S. Navy in 1971. He was sent to Great Lakes Naval Station for boot camp. One time while there, he and some buddies decided to go to the movies. While at the movies, the temperature dropped and there was a snow storm. When they got back to their car, they found the doors had been frozen shut. They had to use a blow torch to get the door open. Since that time, he has hated the cold weather. Some of the time in the navy was spent during the Vietnam War. He was an electronic technician radar specialist. He told a story about having to repair the radar that was way high up on the top of the ship during rough seas. It can be difficult to be a navy sailor and be constantly motion sick. During his navy years, he also taught advance electronics.
While in the navy, he met his wife, Nancy, at the United Servicemen’s Organization (USO) in San Diego. They dated for for a few months before Rick proposed with a song he had written for Nancy. They were married on July 20th, 1974 at Holy Spirt Catholic Church in San Diego.
Three years later they gave birth to their first child, Chris. He was born in La Mesa, CA.
Rick discovered that he could get a student loan through the Navy but it was not required to be be used for college classes. He then asked Nancy if he could use some of the money to buy an Apple Computer to teach himself how to program. He told Nancy that he would not use all the loan and would use some of it to buy some new furniture.
Rick loved to play softball in his free time while in the Navy. He would continue to play throughout his life. One year he was even lucky enough to have his dream to play not only with his sons but his brother too. During one game, the announcer even remarked that the bases were “loaded with Hoiberg's” when Chris, Joe and Rick were all on base with his brother Rob coming to bat.
A second son, Joe, was born in the Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA on Rick’s birthday July 28th, 1980. Joe was the only gift Rick got for his birthday that year.
After the navy, he had various other jobs, one of those jobs was teaching at Mission College. While there, he met someone who got him an interview with Apple Computer. At that time, there were no degrees in programming for personal computers. Due to his extreme enthusiasm for the chance to work at his dream job at Apple, there were two different groups at Apple fighting over him. Needless to say he got his dream job. All together he worked for Apple about 15 years.
During his tenure at Apple, Rick and Nancy had their third child, a beautiful little girl named Elizabeth on March 1st, 1983. She was born in San Jose, CA. She would grow up to be daddy’s little girl.
After a brief couple of years working for a start-up modem company, Global Village, Rick returned to Apple. He continued to work at Apple until given the opportunity to work with his son at another start-up, PACE Anti-Piracy, in 1999.
Rick found his true calling while singing for the South Valley Community Church Promise Heir Men’s Gospel Group. His close friendships with members of the gospel group brought him back to a relationship with the Lord.
On September 21, 2002, Rick welcomed another member to his family when Chris and Tiffany got married in Gilroy, CA. Three short years later, Rick and Nancy became grandparents for the first time when Makayla was born on January 17, 2005. Their second grandchild would be two years later on January 19th, 2007, when Sydney was born.
In 2005, Rick joined eBay at the San Jose campus working on their developer site. During that time, Apple came out with the iPhone. Apple was trying to convince eBay that they should do an eBay app for the iPhone launch. Rick and another coworker put together a prototype eBay app that Apple and eBay were very excited about. Rick worked with a mobile development company, that would be later purchased by eBay, in Portland to advance the app to what it is today. In 2012, Rick moved from the Bay Area to Portland, Oregon in order to work more closely with the eBay mobile group.
He also was very supportive of pregnancy resource centers (pro-life centers). One of the fundraisers he came up with was to put together a CD called Celebrate Life. Rick contacted some Christian country artist friends and asked them to donate a song for the CD. By the end of the day, there were 11 songs donated.
Rick continued his evangelism through his music singing for seniors at local long term care facilities in the Bay Area. He also continued to support his love of Christian Country music by working with and supporting other Christian Country artists over the years. His love of Christian Country music brought him to Nashville every year for the Inspirational Country Music Awards.
One of the most important things in is his life was his family. Rick was a supportive older brother, a husband that was loving and giving, a father that a child would be proud to have and a grandfather that was always ready to laugh and sing.

I met him at the ICMA in Nashville. He was very encouraging to me as an Artist. I loved his humor and zest for life. I had no idea who he was, I just liked being around him. He is missed.

We met the Hoiberg's when our niece, Tiffany married Chris. We have shared many special occasions. As the time passed we began to know Rick better and really appreciate him for his loving and giving heart. He shared his music with us, and became the "Piped Piper" to his and our grandchildren. It was a joy to watch them sing along in their happy voices. We would be remiss if we did not comment on our niece's husband, Chris. Rick and Nancy can be very proud of the father, husband, relative, and friend that Chris is to all that know him. When we have commented to Chris, "Gee, you are such a nice guy." Chris in his sweet and humble way has said, "I am like my father. He taught me by his example." What a wonderful tribute to a life well lived. You will be missed, Rick.

My daughter Tiffany has been part of the Hoiberg family for 20 years. Since Rick & Nancy and I share our grandchildren we have had celebrated many holidays together. I think of Christmas Eve a couple years ago when our families were together at my niece's home in San Jose. Rick brought his guitar as he often did. He went into the living room and took it out and just started playing. Eventually all the younger girls started to sing Xmas songs. It was so enjoyable to see these girls having fun and showing off their beautiful voices while Rick played along with his guitar. He had such talent and enjoyed the kids. He is missed.

I met the Hoiberg's a few years ago. I know their daughter Elizabeth as I worked at her daycare and my boys both attended there. Rick and Nancy went to The Anchor where I have attended. I really got to know them in 2015. When me and my now husband were getting married. I invited Rick and Nancy to our wedding. Rick offered to sing a song for us. In which he did. Testify to love, such a beautiful song. He also danced with me during my money dance and Nancy did at the same time with my husband. We have wonderful memories of that through pictures, I had asked him to record our wedding ceremony, and he recorded most of the reception too and in turn creating a wedding video for us. Something I'll cherish forever! Rick was already at a point where he didn't know what was gonna happen next but I'll never forget how he told Nancy "I'm going to their wedding" declaring he'd be there like he was already proclaiming God would make it happen. And he did. The last time I saw Rick was at our wedding. Singing, dancing, etc! But with a big smile on his face. That's the kind of memory I want to have and hold on to! He is a great man who loved his family, friends, and people in general selflessly. He was like another dad to me and treated me like his own. I'll never forget that. We miss you Rick and love you very much!!!!

I met Nancy through Christians in Commerce and I met Rick through the Informed Choices Pregnancy Center. He donated his time and money and energy so selflessly...as did Nancy. They were quite a pair. What I noticed at the memorial that touched me so deeply, was the depth of love for our Savior that was so evident in Rick, Nancy, their children and grandchildren....and their friends. The men who spoke from their heart, wept for their friend are men of true integrity and courage and depth of spirit. It is evident that the love of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit is alive in this family. These are the types of men that we need in our world...men willing to share stories of friendship, mentor, son to father, grandfather to child, husband to wife. Your sons will carry your legacy Rick into their life and their world. What a blessing to have known him and his family. Thank you Pastor Greg for a heart-felt service and the standing ovation at the end...that was terrific. All the music was tremendous. I felt like it was a worship service not a memorial. Very uplifting and so God honoring too.

I wanted to speak today but open mic look like it kind of got cut off. So i'll share here. It would have sounded something like this only way more nervous and shaky in front of the audience :) "hi. i'm one of chris's other brothers. i'm not good at this but i felt somebody should say something, on behalf of the GC(our group of friends). I didn't interact with rick too much but i've known chris for over 20 years. i can tell you that more than once i've heard rick make a joke and immediately saw where chris gets his sense of humor from. I also remember rick singing to chris and his wedding and seeing how touched chris was in that moment. Before we all moved out of our homes, we weren't the type of group to go out much, we had venues where we would hang out. Like joe's house, or my house, and chris's house was one of them. I just want say that we feel the loss too, and we love you chris. Rest peacefully, Rick. We're forever thankful for bringing our brother Chris into this world.

I met Rick 16 years ago when I was working at Preview Systems. We then worked together in the same small office when I left Preview and contracted with PACE. He always had time for me, whether it was advice over a difficult problem or sharing a good joke, and I've always tried practicing what he taught me. I feel fortunate that we reconnected last year and had a chance to talk about old times.

We spent close to 13 years with family raising our kids, getting together at TT or Rick and Nancy's in Gilroy for all holidays and birthdays, Rick loved his family, we used to laugh so much he was so funny, kind, and just a all around great guy, I remember one time when we were at thousand trails celebrating someone in the family birthday and Rick was filming Grandpa Floyd pounding the ice for the ice cream maker and drinking his warm beer, and Grandpa Floyd asked Rick to put that thing down and get him so more Ice, and Rick would just keep saying what, what, till Floyd would get mad and get up himself, oh we would laugh, it was all in good fun, he loved his parents so too. I remember when we moved to Minnesota and Rick and family came to Melissa graduation, that meant so much to us,to all the family. Love and prayers to you All!

So sorry to hear the news of Rick's passing. My deepest condolences to Nancy and family, and all of Rick's friends. Rick became my manager at Apple, and he was a good boss and more importantly a good friend. I had the opportunity to work again with Rick when I brought him on to my team at eBay. A highlight of my career was our first project together at Apple, AppleTalk Remote Access. Our software won awards and was a big success.

I was privileged to have known Rick as a colleague, mentor, and most importantly as a good friend.
There were so many blessings I received from him throughout the years. I will always remember his great wit, kind spirit and generosity.
And his faith was so strong and I admired him for it. There were times we'd spend hours talking after dinner and he touched my life in many ways and helped me through some rough times.
I loved him like a brother and will do my best to honor his memory with my words and actions for the rest of my days.
