Our beloved Richard Eugene Irby entered his eternal rest on January 29, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on April 11, 1948, in
Greenville, South Carolina, Richard lived a life rich in love, resilience, and generosity. He grew up in Greenville and graduated from Sterling High School in 1966, where he was an active participant in sports and developed a deep passion for teamwork and dedication. Although injuries hindered his professional ambitions in football, he channeled his hard work into a successful career in the textile industry.
Richard furthered his education at Greenville Technical College and, after a fulfilling career, retired from management but continued to share his talents by working part-time in security at General Electric. Known for his intelligence and work ethic, Richard was also an accomplished auto mechanic. Friends and family will remember him for his willingness to lend a hand, often repairing cars with a smile, and for his culinary prowess that brought joy to family reunions through his mouth-watering grilled steaks and fluffy cakes.
Richard cherished his family above all else. He is survived by three daughters, Jenet (Michelle) Anderson, Melissa Anderson, and Elo (Janice) Irby; a sister, Rose Ella (Beattie) Irby Robinson; eight grandchildren, Tunisia Anderson, Audrey Davis, Jakevis Wright, Sr., Brittney Smith, DeMarcus Davis, Christopher Davis, Warren Wofford, and Tyra Pearson; two great-grandchildren, Jakevis Wright, Jr., and Ja'dynn Manigault; a special niece, Samantha Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He also leaves behind his wife, Magdalene "Madge" Cohens-Irby of Greenville.
He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Edith Irby, son Harold Michael Wyne, daughter Joanna Rene Davis, and brother Harold Michael Irby.
Aside from his family commitments, Richard volunteered with the Greenville Literacy Program, sharing his passion for learning and helping others grow personally and professionally. In his leisure time, he enjoyed watching classic Westerns and crime television shows and following his favorite sports teams, the Dallas Cowboys and Boston Celtics.
Tragically, Richard suffered a severe fall in October 2025, which led to his passing. He is now reunited in Heaven with his beloved parents, a son and daughter, and cherished brother. His family mourns the profound loss of such a remarkable man, whose spirit will forever shine brightly in their hearts.
Mr. Irby's home going service will be held at Reedy Fork Baptist Church in
Simpsonville, SC on Monday, February 16, 2026, with viewing and visitation from 11:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m., followed by a funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m. The committal and burial will immediately follow at Reedy Fork Baptist Church Cemetery.
