Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Mr. Richard "Dick" Edward Jones, Sr., 87, of Schuyler, NY, passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Wynn Hospital, with his loving family by his side.
Richard was born in Cortland, NY, on December 26, 1937, the son of Morris and Dorothy (Young) Jones. He was raised in Utica and graduated from Utica Free Academy. On July 13, 1957, Dick was united in marriage to Evelyn T. Ryan, a loving and devoted union that lasted 68 years.
Dick proudly served in the United States Navy Seabees for 25 years before retiring. One of his proudest accomplishments was serving his country as a BUC (Builder Chief Petty Officer). He was also a union mason apprentice and, later, the owner and operator of Haman and Jones Construction Company. He then accepted a position at BOCES as an educator in construction, where he taught for 30 years before retiring. He continued his role as chairman of VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) for several years after his retirement.
Dick was a longtime member and past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in both Utica and Deerfield, where he achieved the title of Golden Eagle. He was also a member of the American Legion Utica Post 229, N. Utica.
Being a highly skilled carpenter who not only constructed his family's home with his own hands but also instilled his knowledge and talent in his son. The two of them worked on many projects together and were always willing to pick up a hammer and lend a helping hand. When he wasn't helping others, you could also find him in his workshop building furniture or tinkering with his latest project. Dick enjoyed traveling and many adventures with his beloved wife by his side.
When he wasn't at home, you could often find him at the legion with a smile on his face and a beer in his hand. He enjoyed spending time with his fellow veterans and finishing the SUDOKU puzzle in the paper. Of his many accomplishments, he was proudest of his family. His quick wit and smile will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his family.
Mr. Jones is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn; son and daughter-in-law, Dick, Jr., and Judy (Bullen) Jones of Schuyler; three cherished grandchildren, Nichole Jones and Eric Markwardt of Middleville, NY, Stephanie Jones and her wife, Holly of Columbus, OH, and Jacob Jones of Schuyler, and four adored great-grandchildren, Aiden, Max, Ace, and Luna Jones. He was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Dorothy; granddaughter-in-law, Morganne Jones, and their feline companion, Derby.
In keeping with Dick's wishes, there is no visitation.
