Richard Ralph Jones, born on January 22, 1936, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, departed this life peacefully at home in Santee, California, on January 27, 2026. His passing marks the end of a remarkable journey filled with love, generosity, and a sense of humor that touched all who knew him.

Rich devoted nearly his entire adult working life to United Airlines, culminating in an impressive 35 years of service. His commitment to his work was only surpassed by his unwavering devotion to his family. Rich's generosity defined him; he was a man who would provide for his family and friends in any way he could, always putting their needs above his own. He cherished his wife, LaVerne Frances Jones, continually showering her with praise and affection.

Rich was known for his irreverent sense of humor and often entertained those around him with his sarcastic remarks and playful jokes. For the majority of his life he was a dog lover and owner of German Shepherds and Bassett Hounds. He was particularly fond of Pittsburgh sports, passionately following the Steelers and Penguins even after relocating to California.

A proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Rich’s family meant everything to him. He is survived by:

Son Richard Malcolm Jones and daughter-in-law Lisa Butler Jones, along with their daughters Julia and Emma.

Daughter Mary Louise Cope and son-in-law Michael Cope, along with their daughters Nicole Wilson, and her sons Jack and James Wilson, and daughter Jessica Kastelberg and her husband Tyler, and their children Harrison and Kennedy Kastelberg, and daughter Natalie Cope.

Son John Joseph Jones and daughter-in-law Virginia Jones, along with daughter Marina Halsema and son in law Lucas, and their children Abigail, Ethan and Andrew Halsema, daughter Sarah Ramos and her son Jonathon Ramos, and son Joshua Jones.

Daughter Nora Ann Landis and son-in-law Mark Landis, along with daughter Megan Landis (angel in heaven), son Michael Landis and daughter-in-law Ciara, and their daughter Lexi, and son Matthew Landis and daughter-in-law Brynn, along with their daughters Braelynn and Emersyn Landis.

Throughout his life, Rich embraced various hobbies and interests with fervor. A life long movie enthusiast, he particularly reveled in musicals and had an encyclopedic memory of movies and actors. He was a near-professional level pool player in his younger days, participating in tournaments and local teams, notably with his late son Ron. His passion for collecting coins spanned many years, leading to a remarkable accumulation. Furthermore, Rich enjoyed painting and gardening until health challenges limited his activities, and in his younger days he enjoyed stamp collecting, chess and playing cards with friends. His curiosity for mysticism guided him through his long-term association with the Rosicrucian Order, where he explored deeper truths and universal knowledge. Late in life, he became passionate about politics and became an ardent supporter of the democratic party, closely following political developments and engaging in political debates and commentary.

Rich was preceded in death by his son Ronald Paul Jones, granddaughter Megan Landis, father Malcolm Jones, mother Sarah Jones, sister Ruth Rumin, and sister Mary Lou Sullivan. Each of these losses marked a significant point in his life, yet he carried their memories with him throughout his journey.

As we remember Richard Ralph Jones, we celebrate a man whose love extended beyond words, whose humor brightened the lives of others, and whose spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his beloved family.
