Richard Landuyt, 90, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Richard was a lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe Park. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and came back to Grosse Pointe to marry his high school sweetheart, Sylvia. Together they raised six children.
Richard was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia. He leaves behind six children, Rick (Andrea), Renee, Shelley Wagner, Sue Glover (John), David (Helen) and Steven (Michael); nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his companion, Joan; and many other friends and community members.
Richard loved to fish with his best friend, Pete, and over the years they collected many good stories about their escapades on Lake St. Clair.
Richard was a true servant/leader. Without ever seeking recognition, he led a lifetime of giving back to others with humility, kindness and good humor. For more than 20 years, he volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul, counseled youth in the prison ministry, served as treasurer for his condo association and, together with Sylvia, was active in the Christian Family Movement, Cursillo and De Colores since 1968.
He was a pillar of service to his church, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where for decades he helped count and organize the weekly collections. St. Ambrose was where Richard attended high school, played football, met Sylvia, got married, baptized his children, attended family weddings and had Sylvia's funeral. It also is where he will attend his final Mass as he makes his journey home.
Richard loved his community and his friends. He showed his family how to continue with life after Sylvia's passing by finding joy and companionship with his new love, Joan. His lifetime of sacrifice, service and giving back was food for his soul. His family knows he will rest in peace in the knowledge that he led by example and left the world a better place.
A celebration of life takes place Saturday, Jan. 27, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 15020 Hampton, Grosse Pointe Park, with a gathering at 10 a.m., followed by Mass at 11 a.m.

I was out of town at the time of his passing otherwise I would have been there to give my respects to this great guy. I still remember him behind the meat counter on Mack Avenue, that´s how old I am . He also accompanied my brother Chuck and I on a couple of Comunity Council boat trips for a day of lunch and camaraderie and maybe a few beers , so I got to know him in our later years and realized again how nice and gentle of a man he was ! Richard was a wonderful guy and a nice friend. May he rest in peace with his wife, Sylvia in the presence of the Lord. John Chouinard

Too many wonderful memories of this lovely man to pick a favorite. I joined the Landuyt Family on a CFM trip to Colorado while in high school. It was my first ever flight on a plane and I can picture Dick standing in the aisle socializing with everyone (back when you didn't have to remain in you seats!) and he ensured I was okay and treated me like one of his kids. I was reprimanded when appropriate and praised with love and kindness. He will be missed.
