Fremont, Indiana - Richard "Rick" LeRoy Lewis II, 77, of Fremont, Indiana, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at his home.
Richard was born on February 9, 1948, in Garrett, Indiana. He was the son of Richard L. and Doris "Jean" (Holsinger) Lewis. Rick graduated from Garrett High School in 1966 and received his Bachelor of Education from Butler University where he received a scholarship to play football. He was Assistant Football Coach for Angola High School for 11 years.
Rick married the love of his life, Margo J. Januseski, on August 8, 1970.
Rick was a Master Trooper for the Indiana State Police, District 22 Fort Wayne Post from April 1, 1972-December 31, 2002, when he retired to run for Sherriff of Steuben County. He was a road trooper for all his career and was a Department Scuba Diver. Rick became Sherriff on January 1, 2003, until his retirement on December 31, 2010.
Rick was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Angola, Indiana. He was also a member of the Indiana State Police Alliance and the Indiana Sheriffs' Association. Rick and Margo enjoyed participating in many community events, especially "Shop with a Cop."
Rick enjoyed fishing, grilling and watching his grandchildren's school and sporting events. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Margo J. Lewis of Fremont, Indiana; children, Matt (Amy) Lewis of Angola, Indiana, Andy (Sarah) Lewis of Angola, Indiana and Sara (Bryan) Weber of Fremont, Indiana along with his 9 beloved grandchildren, Madison, Reese, Cru, Lilly, Kellen, Lincoln, Kade, Ellie and Oliver.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Suzanne Saffen.
Funeral Mass will be at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, January 10, 2026, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 700 W. Maumee Street, Angola, Indiana with Fr. Osman Ramos officiating.
Visitation will be from 10-12:00 Noon, Saturday, January 10, 2026, prior to the service at the church.
A Celebration of Life will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Glendarin Hills Golf Club, 3333 Glendarin Way, Angola, Indiana 46703.
Memorial donations may be made to the Indiana State Police Alliance, 1415 Shelby Street, Suite A, Indianapolis, IN 46203.

I am honored to say I had the privilege working along side of Rick. His honesty and integrity were qualities we all looked up to. While campaigning for sherrif his opponent played some childish games. Rick took the higher road and simply let it go. That spoke volumes of his character. Rick you will be sorely missed. The community will be a lesser place without you.
