Richard Allen Mackie, 78, of Pampa, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at his home.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 27, 2026 at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with John Curry, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

Richard was born on November 5, 1947 in Pampa to Dock and Helen Ruth Mackie. He attended school in Pampa and graduated from Pampa High School in 1966. Richard went on to attend Texas Tech University and earned his bachelor's degree. He met the love his life, Carey Meaker, in 1984 and the two were later married on August 30, 1986. Richard worked as a trailer salesman for a few years before he was encouraged to go to court reporter school by his friend, Bob Baker. He worked as an official court reporter for Judge Waters and later Judge Vanderpool before retiring in 2013.

Richard was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at the Pampa Country Club. He was also an amateur archaeologist. Richard and his close friend, Kelley Baker, spent a great deal of time searching old battle sites and Native American burial grounds with their metal detectors. He was also a contributor of several of the items found at the White Deer Land Museum. Richard was an enthusiastic supporter of Texas Tech athletics especially, football, baseball, and basketball. He also enjoyed watching PGA Tours and was proud of being able to attend the Master’s practice round. However, the most important thing was spending time with family. Whether it was hunting with his boys when they were younger or taking their annual fishing trip to Lake Fork, he was happiest when surrounded by his loved ones.

Richard had a special ability to connect with anyone. He was personable and genuinely enjoyed getting to know someone. Richard had a wonderful sense of humor and liked giving people a hard time. He was ornery in the best way and knew how to make people laugh. Richard and the laughs he shared with family and friends will be greatly missed. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Gary Mackie and Dwight Mackie.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carey Mackie; three children, Aly Watkins and husband Jordan, Jack Mackie, and Dock Mackie and wife Sharon; one granddaughter, Josie Watkins; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to the White Deer Land Museum, 112 S Cuyler St, Pampa, Texas, 79065.
