Richard (Dick) Gary McGiness, age 79, of Lake City, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on November 7, 2025.
He was born on October 10, 1946, in Cadillac, Michigan, to Charles and Dorris (Ryder) McGiness. Richard married Linda Kay Morrow on August 28, 1971, in Lake City, and together they shared 54 years of marriage.
Richard dedicated over 30 years to education as a teacher and coach, leading football, basketball, track, and cross country programs in Lake City, Cadillac, and Kingsley. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Stephen's Catholic Church, and the Michigan High School Football and Track Coaches Associations, and was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
He enjoyed watching the Lions, Tigers, and University of Michigan sports, traveling to Disney World, camping with friends, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and granddogs. There was never a dull moment when he was around; he filled every gathering with laughter, stories, and fun.
Richard is survived by his wife, Linda (Morrow) McGiness; children, Brook (Bryon) Meyer, Brandie Kindle, Becky (Jason) Fox, and Brett McGiness; brother, Tom McGiness; sister, Pat McGiness; brother-in-law, David James; and grandchildren, Nina and Noah Kindle, Molly and Sam Meyer, and Blake and Harlie Fox.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorris (Ryder) McGiness, and his sister, Carol James.
Visitation will take place from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Young-Holdship Funeral Home in Lake City, with a Rosary led by the Knights of Columbus at 6:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Lake City, officiated by Rev. Michael Janowski and assisted by Rev. Kunal Baliar Singh.
