1943, Sanford Jr. High School. Miss Flynn's geography class. (She could control the class with one over the shoulder glare.) Thomas Dewey vs. FDR. The polio epi-demic. Home Ec with Marion Stocco (Schmidt). We go
back eighty years!
1946-1948: Roosevelt High School, you, Patty Grass and I worked on the weekly school newapaper, the "Standard" for 3 years.
After high school, jobs, college, later marriage and children. The St. Kevin years, where the children went to school. Four couples: you and Pat, Connie and Gen Case, Bob and Marion Schmidt, Donna and Jack Johnson formed a study group with Fr. Frank Kittock as chaplain. We bonded and became lifelong friends. Treasured memories of July 4th when Dot and Heinie Grass graciously opened their Clearwater lake cabin for 25 kids, 8 adults plus your parents and sister, Margaret. The children still talk about that today.
We were devastated by Pat's passing in 1964 but then we traveled to Des Moines in 1965 for your wedding to the lovely Joan. What a blessing she was to your family and all of us.
As our families and responsibilities grew, our " get-togethers" became less frequent. Other losses occurred: Bob Schmidt, Connie Case, Gen Case and Joan. We remaining three continued to meet once a year for the Sunday morning brunch until it was no longer possible (separated by miles) to do so.
Now you have left us, too, but you will never be forgotten.
Dick, soar with the eagles, you deserve it.
With sincerest affection, Donna Johnson Hoagberg
