RICHARD MILLER Obituary

Richard W. Miller, PhD (""Dick""), Wyn and William Y. Hutchinson Professor in Ethics and Public Life (Emeritus) at Cornell University, passed away on June 9, 2023, at the age of 77. He is survived by Peggy Dieter, his wife of 41 years, and his daughter, Laura Miller.

Intellectually curious and dedicated to social justice, Dick served as a philosophy professor at Cornell from 1973 until his retirement in 2019. His work brought him great joy. In addition to teaching and advising graduate students, he also organized colloquia on racial and class inequality and the ethics of globalization. A prolific writer, he is the author of 5 books: Globalizing Justice: The Ethics of Poverty and Power, Moral Differences: Truth, Justice and Conscience in a World of Conflict, Fact and Method: Explanation, Confirmation and Reality in the Natural and the Social Sciences, Analyzing Marx: Morality, Power and History, and Equality, Democracy and National Sovereignty: Reconciling East and West (Chinese title: ). He was completing edits on a 6th, The Ethics of Social Democracy: Justice Meets Capitalism, at the time of his death.

Dick had other great loves, including a deep appreciation for visual art, music, film, theater, and food. Also an avid and courageous traveler, he explored the world with his family and delighted in sharing all of these joys with them. And they delighted in him. He leaves a hole in their lives that can never be filled, yet his memory lives on within them and in his work, both of which were of utmost importance to him. A service is planned for 6/19/23 at Bangs Funeral Home in Ithaca, NY, 1pm. Donations in his memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders.

I took my first philosophy course from Prof. Miller as an undergrad in 2006. It was a course on ethics and global justice. Although I wasn't a philosophy major, that class sharpened my thinking in a way that no other course did. I remember my brain hurting (in a good way) as I sat in the stacks, surrounded by books from Rawls and Singer and Miller, writing my final paper and wrestling with balancing moral principles against meeting obligations to our closest compatriots.

I have particularly fond memories of Prof. Miller's lectures, so much that I'd gladly go back in time to sit in on another one of his classes. He was quite funny and unfailingly fair and always thoughtful.

Thank you to him and and his family for having an impact on my life and the many other students he has touched.

Dick was a wonderful friend for over 40 years. and the best dissertation advisor that a grad student could have hope to have. So supportive, and loyal, and for as long as I knew him, and so smart and engaged. He knew how to listen and how to advise, he cared, and I always knew he was in my corner. And his suggestions were always so wise and helpful. I will miss him always!!
