Richard Allen Mitchell

 

Richard Allen Mitchell, 63, of Selmer, TN passed away on September 26, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Richard was born November 3, 1959 to the late Joe Ervin Mitchell and the late Mary Ruth Mitchell in Savannah, TN.

In his early years, Richard loved Little League Baseball, Boy Scouts, swimming and camping with his family.  He went on to lifeguard at the Selmer City Pool and then work at Piggy Wiggly Supermarket.

After graduating from McNairy Central High School in 1978, he started his career in carpentry.  From the ground up, he built a successful business, Richard Mitchell Construction Company.  He built custom homes and commercial buildings in Selmer and the surrounding area. There was never a job too large or small that he did not pour his talent into.

Richard married his high school sweetheart, Pam, and together they celebrated over 43 years together.  Richard had two daughters, Heather (Stephen) Reed of Selmer, TN and Lindsey (Adam) Henson of Memphis, TN.  He had four grandchildren, Joseph Dickey, Heidi Dickey, McCovey Henson, and Eze Henson.  He also had two step grandchildren, Caleb Reed and Corbin Reed.  Richard thought the world of all of his grandchildren.

Richard grew up in the First Presbyterian Church of Selmer where he served as an Elder. Later in life, he became a member of Selmer First United Methodist Church.

Besides his love for his work, he loved life on the water.  His free time was spent on Pickwick Lake aboard the Lady Mitchell. He appreciated a good sporting event but especially loved football.  He was also an avid hunter, but his favorite was a brisk morning with a buddy catching sauger. 

Richard had a host of extended family and friends that he leaves behind who will all miss him dearly.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Mitchell and Wendell Mitchell.  Richard is survived by his wife, two daughters, and grandchildren.
