Susan,

I was put in touch with our mortality when I opened the most recent W&L magazine and in the obituary section found Dick and two of my fraternity brothers. Dick and I were on the wrestling team at W&L one weight apart and I spent the better part of two years figuring out how to frustrate his Granby Roll. He practiced with a precise intensity that made us better wrestlers. I enjoyed our time together. I am sorry for your loss. Kemble White 11/29/10

I was saddened to hear of Richard's death. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your sons. I have fond memories of him proudly showing me the beautiful property that you live on the night I came for dinner a few years ago. Sincerely, Nancy Wilcox

DEAR SUSAN, WHIT & RICHARD, To say the "Dickie" of my childhood, the "Dick" of my adulthood, has died continues to bring instant tears. My heart is filled chock-a-block with happy memories of Sandbridge visits:

my abortive rescue of you & Whit before the hurricane which left US powerless at the Beach, BUT NOT your home;
the fire in Pungo;

Thanksgiving at Merry Point;
the closing of your short cut through THE "BASE";

helping you take a last load to Suffolk.

Sue, you & he were so thrilled with your new home "on the lake", your SPECIAL PLACE for morning coffee; so busy with creating your own touches; I can't remember what year that was.

My favorite memory is the day I told him I could never understand anyone's love of Science Fiction. I couldn't read it, because trying to pronounce the strange names took away all pleasure. "Have you ever read Robert Heinlein ?" "No". And that was the beginning of hundreds of hours of enjoying A/THE master creator of his time.
There wasn't time to make travel arrangements from Maine to join the celebration of Dick's life; be assured, however, my deep love, and a myriad of thoughts & prayers have been with you & remain with you constantly.
Devotedly, Roxane

Richard was more than just a friend, my teacher, a guiding hand, He showed me that I can be more. He helped open new doors and gave me the motivation to achieve my “A” lic as a Aircraft mechanic, Richard and Susan kept me going and gave me hope when I thought of giving up. If not for Richard I truly wouldn’t be all I am today. Richard you gave me so much but most of all you gave me friendship and was always open and true to me even when I wasn’t with you. I will never forget you and your teaching and words will always guide me for the rest of my life. My daughter and Cathy loved you so much and we all will miss you. Thank you so much for all you have done for me and my family.

Dickie and I wrestled on the great Norfolk Academy 1960 to 1962 teams that lost by only one point to perennial State champion Granby in 1962. I was pinned by Wayne Simons that night and have felt responsible ever since for the team loss. Dickie was one of the best wrestlers I ever saw. He probably still holds the State record for the quickest pin, something like six seconds as I recall against a very good Virginia Beach High School opponent who had vowed to beat Dickie and had some sort of grudge against Dickie. He was a modest guy who never bragged about his great wrestling skills. He won his match against a Granby State Champion in that 1962 team match in front of a packed Granby High gym, as I recall. After I graduated from Norfolk Academy, a year ahead of Dickie, I never saw Dickie again until outside Steve Steinhilbers funeral several years ago. We talked for a few minutes during which he told me he had a flight school out in Chesapeake. He was, as usual, very modest and understated his accomplishments and good deeds. We hugged goodbye, and I have many times thought of him since as my life took me to life in Ecuador, etc. I am so very sorry to learn of Dickie's death. I will think of him a lot in the hours and days to come and for the rest of my life. He was one of the really, truly, great ones I have known. This just makes me very sad as I recall that young boy, a school mate and a team mate of mine from so long ago. It seems impossible that he is gone as I see him in my mind so clearly back then.

Richard was truly a gentleman and a gentle man. I learned to fly at Mercury Flight Center and his staff was always courteous as he lead by example. He always had time to talk, always helped in any way he could. Richard, you now fly high with God and he is lucky to have you as his "Pilot", you will be missed. Thank you for everything.

To the family, you are in my prayers.

I remember the Musicks from way back at Norfolk Academy, seeing Richard on occasion afterward. He was a helluva guy and I am sure will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. Special thoughts to Susan in this time of loss.
