Richard Nellis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by A. G. Cole Funeral Home, Inc. on Mar. 3, 2026.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard H. Nellis, who left us on February 28, 2026, at the age of 70 in Johnstown, New York.

Born on May 24,1955, in Amsterdam, New York, Richard was the beloved son of Melvin and Helen Nellis. He was also lovingly raised by Charles and Mildred Smullens.

Richard grew up in Johnstown and was a graduate of Johnstown High School. He went on to dedicate his career as a Youth Division Assistant at the Tryon Juvenile Correctional Facility.

He will be missed the most by his wife of 40 years, Kathleen Nellis, his daughter Katie Warner, and his beloved son-in-law Ryan Warner. Sunday dinners will not be the same without his laughter and stories.

He is also lovingly survived by his two grandchildren, Bryson and Cole Warner, who filled his life with joy, laughter, and endless love.

Many fond memories were made with his two brother-in-laws and their families. From vacations and holidays to countless barbecues surrounded by his nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, those moments will be treasured always.

He was especially proud of his nephew, Lucas Nellis (Natalie), and his niece, Brooke Tennis (Jake), and never missed an opportunity to brag about their accomplishments.

Richard also has three loving sisters, Arlene Rockwell, Audrey DiMaria, and Georgiana Squier. He is predeceased by his beloved brothers Melvin and Wayne "Tiny" Nellis and his sister, Charlotte Shanahan.

Richard loved music and could spend hours singing his favorite "oldies." A lifelong sports fan, he enjoyed playing, coaching, and cheering on his teams. Some of his happiest moments were spent on his boat with friends and family, sharing laughter and the simple pleasures of life.

Whether you knew him as Grandpa, Dad, "Dickie," or the "Jungle Cat," one thing is certain, he will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Family and friends will gather to honor his memory at a later date this spring.

In lieu of donations, please celebrate his life by cheering for the New York Jets, because he always believed a winning season was just around the corner.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown, NY.
