Richard C. Nelson, 73, of Avon, Indiana, passed away on October 24, 2025. He was born on October 9, 1952, in Indianapolis, to the late Robert and Geraldine Nelson.
Rick exemplified a spirit of generosity and kindness that touched the lives of many. He was a man of many interests, most notably with a passion for film, theater, and literature, amassing an impressive collection of thousands of movies and books that reflected his deep appreciation for filmmaking and storytelling. Rick cherished the joy of movement and social connections made through years of taking ballroom dance lessons. Rick enjoyed attending concerts and had a special affinity for video gaming.
Rick was especially proud of his role as "Grampy" to Rory, cherishing moments spent together building LEGO, playing video games, and discussing the finer points of DC comics and their superheroes.
Rick was committed to helping others through the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He led meetings and served as a sponsor for those seeking guidance. He took great pride in his service to the AA community, demonstrating remarkable generosity and giving back in meaningful ways.
Rick will be remembered for his quiet strength, dedication to his passions, and the profound impact he had on those fortunate enough to know him. Rick is survived by his brother, David (Lisa) Nelson; his step-son, Jeremy (Lindsey Lord) Railey, and grandson, Rory; cousin Bill (Jane) Nelson and their children, Erik and Adam. He was preceded in passing by his parents.
A Graveside Service for Rick will be held on Monday, November 3, at 2:30pm, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Guests are asked to meet at the office at 2:15pm.
