In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Ulyses Phifer, Jr. and Rev. James Russell Phifer. Richard is survived by his father, Ulyses Phifer, Sr. (Frances) of Charlotte; mother-in-law, Annie Dawkins of Charlotte; his wife, Annie Phifer of Raleigh; sons, Julian Phifer (Sharnelle) of Durham and Richie Phifer, Jr. of Raleigh; daughter, Kenya Dent (Ralph) of Wendell; brothers Clyde Phifer (Helen) of Charlotte, Melvin Phifer, Sr. (Geraldine) of Ohio; sisters-in-law, Betty Phifer, Johnnie Washington, Anita White (Maurice), all of Charlotte; brother-in-law, Jerry Hawkins of Charlotte; grandchildren, ZaQuara, Alysa, and Legacy Dent of Wendell, and Gabrielle and Aaron Phifer of Durham; and a host of nieces and nephews. He LOVED going to the Waffle House, having a cup of coffee, and spending endless hours socializing and visiting with everyone, as he never met a stranger. He showed his generosity by taking in anyone who needed a helping hand by allowing them to stay in his home when they didn't have a place to live. Earning many degrees in his lifetime, Richard was a strong advocate of education for people from all walks of life. He often encouraged individuals to further their education, no matter what previous level of education they had already obtained.
