Richard J. Rosenthal

Richard J Rosenthal passed away peacefully on January 11th, 2026, at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and family that will live on for generations. Born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, he cherished his memories of growing up in the "old neighborhood," which remained close to his heart throughout his life. He was a devoted parent, a proud grandparent, a cherished sibling, and a person whose quiet strength and steady presence meant more than words can express.

Richard honorably served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1962, answering the call to serve his country with courage and dedication. That commitment to service continued throughout his career with the New York City Department of Sanitation, where he worked tirelessly and with pride from 1970 until 1990. He believed deeply in hard work, responsibility, and showing up for others, values that guided his life.

Nothing brought Richard greater joy than family. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur Rosenthal; his mother, Dora Fernandez Rosenthal; his brother, Arthur Rosenthal; and his sister-in-law, Dolly Rosenthal.

Richard is survived by his loving daughter, Linda Penney (Lewis), and his son, Richard Rosenthal. He was a proud grandfather to Victoria, Stephanie, and Allison, who were the light of his life, and a devoted great-grandfather whose great-grandson, Cameron Fudge, brought him immeasurable happiness and pride and was the greatest love of his final years.

He is also survived by his beloved sisters, Eugenia Hand and Elizabeth Saglembini (Tommy), and his brothers, Charlie Rosenthal (Judy) and Danny Rosenthal (Kathy), with whom he shared a lifetime of memories, laughter, and unwavering support. Richard is further survived by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

He is also lovingly remembered by his longtime girlfriend, Diane Peoples, and his former wife of 33 years and dear friend until the end, Nancy Edwards, both of whom he cared for deeply and who remained important parts of his life.

Richard will be remembered for his kindness, resilience, and deep love for those closest to him. He had a way of making people feel safe, supported, and understood, and his absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled. Though he may be gone, his spirit lives on in every story told, every lesson passed down, and every life shaped by his love.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Richard's life will be held at a later date. The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time.
