Richard Rytter Obituary
Richard "Rich" Keith Rytter, age 78 of Asheboro passed away peacefully on November 20, 2025 at his home surrounded by loved ones. He was born September 18, 1947 in Arlington, Virginia the son of the late Henry Jensen Rytter and Pauline Lam Rytter. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Henry Rytter.
Rich served honorably with the Virginia National Guard for six years from 1970 to 1976, where he demonstrated a steadfast sense of duty.
Professionally, he made significant contributions in the field of healthcare, working as a controller in hospitals before dedicating himself to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services until his retirement. His career was defined by integrity and a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. A true aficionado of life's finer moments, Rich was a long-time Grateful Dead fan, traveling across the country to experience their music live. His love for nature was evident in his passion for hiking, fishing, and photography, as well as his soft spot for wild birds and the loyal Beagle breed. Rich's love for the breed translated to adoptions from local Beagle rescues. He was a sports enthusiast who found joy both in participating or observing his favorite team or player. Tennis, softball, and auto sports were among his favorites, with a passion for Formula 1 racing, especially attending races in Austin, TX. He reveled in the excitement of hockey, cheering for his longtime team the Washington Capitals and later the Carolina Hurricanes after making a home in North Carolina. Above all, Rich was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. The time spent with his family was his most cherished treasure, and his grandchildren were the light of his life.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 45 years, Mary Travin Rytter; his children, Dawn Rytter Standifur and Kari Rytter Martin and husband Gary; grandchildren, Tyler Standifur, Samuel Standifur; Josh Martin and Justin Martin; two canine companions, Phil and Hank; and numerous other beloved family and friends.
A celebration of Rich's life will be held privately at a later date.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Randolph for their compassionate care of Rich.
