I worked with Dick at DC Cook and also ran many local 10k races with him. I still think of him when I´m struggling on a run or workout. I remember he caught up to me on a race that I´d been struggling with. As he passed he knew just what to say to snap me out of my mental collapse and give me a second wind. I ended up catching him and finishing ahead of him. He came up to me after the race and told me he knew I was slacking in that way only a Chief can.
He was also the "boogie man" that all the C&I Jr. Techs were afraid to see for their drawings sign-offs. He was through but once you demonstrated you knew the material he was there for you. Having been a Navy Reactor Operator myself I knew his methods were aimed at ensuring when we worked on the plant we knew what we were doing.
Shipmate, the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those you have trained, guided and led. Shipmate, you stand relieved. We have the watch.
My condolences to Wilma and the family.
