Richard H. "Dick" Schaeffer, age 73 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully Saturday, December 20, 2014 at CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 23 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard with interment following in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and at the church one hour prior to the service. United Veterans prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Richard Helmuth Schaeffer was born October 16, 1941 in Menno, South Dakota to Helmuth and Martha (Rempfer) Schaeffer. He grew up in Menno until the family moved to a farm near Belgrade, Minnesota in 1956. He was a 1958 graduate of Belgrade High School and then served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962. On September 4, 1965 he married Betty Eckberg at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. The couple moved to Sauk Centre in 1971 where Dick was employed at Kranz Phillips 66 until 1978. In 1978 he began working for 3M in Alexandria. He worked from 3M for 25 years, retiring in 2003. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 67. Dick enjoyed many activities including fishing, playing cards, camping, deer hunting, gardening, bird feeding, and taking care of his yard. He will be remembered for always being there for his children and grandchildren. Survivors include four children, Terry Schaeffer, Scott (Claudette) Schaeffer, Jane (David) Lalim, and Cindi (Herb) Trisco, all of Sauk Centre; six grandchildren, Kyle Schaeffer, Anna Schaeffer, Monique Schaeffer, Mitchell Schaeffer, Kristyna (Ryan) Mikkelson, and Brianna Pagel; and brother, Oscar Schaeffer. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Schaeffer on May 14, 2011; daughter, Penny Schaeffer; son-in-law, John Pagel. Serving as casket bearers will be his grandchildren, Kyle Schaeffer, Anna Schaeffer, Monique Schaeffer, Mitchell Schaeffer, Kristyna Mikkelson, and Brianna Pagel.
