Richard "Dick" M. Schei, passed away at his home on 4 June 2024, following a brief illness. Born to Alfred "Roy" Melroy Schei and Gladyce F. (Bullock) Schei on 17 April 1948, Dick grew up in a loving household that instilled in him the values of hard work, humility, and compassion.
Dick served his country with honor and distinction in the US Army from April 1969 to April 1971, achieving the rank of Specialist 4 (SP4) and bravely serving in Vietnam. He received an honorable discharge for his dedicated service.
Educated in Garrison and Wahpeton, North Dakota, Dick was known for taking great pride in his family and his work, always striving to do his best. He approached challenges with determination and resilience.
Throughout his life, Dick found solace and strength in the embrace of his family, and enjoyed a very close and special relationship with his loving mother. He leaves behind his partner of over 50 years, Janice (Jensen) Schei, his son Melroy (Michele) Schei, and his daughters DeAnna (Daniel "Zeke") Hernandez, Jessica (Kelly) Grotte, and Denise (Eric) Gillies. Dick was also a cherished grandfather to Tyler Schei, Alexis (Donavan) Craig, Haley Hernandez, Dalton Strickler, Katie Grotte, Kamron Grotte, Reese Strickler, Riley Gillies, Grayson Gillies, Mariya Gillies, and Tucker Gillies, leaving behind a legacy of love that will endure for generations.
In addition to his immediate family, Dick is survived by his sisters Margaret "Peggy" Burns of Stanfield, OR, and Connie Cruz of Dallas, TX. He now joins his parents in eternal peace.
Dick's journey was not without its challenges, yet he faced each obstacle with resilience and determination. His unwavering commitment to doing a job well, coupled with his humble demeanor and sense of humor, endeared him to his family, friends, and colleagues.
In his leisure time, Dick enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends. His sweet tooth knew no bounds and his family enjoyed sharing special treats with him. He was known to be lucky at both bingo and pull tabs, much to the delight of those around him.
As we mourn the loss of Richard "Dick" M. Schei, let us also celebrate the richness of his life and the profound impact he had on those around him. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace, forever remembered and deeply missed.
