In his leisure time, Richard enjoyed the excitement of gaming and trips to the casino, a pastime he pursued with joy and enthusiasm.

Survivors include his sons, Richard C. Smith, Jr., Chris Smith and his wife, Emily, and, grandchildren, Kiersten Smith, Charlotte Smith, Lillian Smith, and Christopher Smith; Julia Smith; three step-grandchildren, Amanda Lehnert, Nicole Berger, and Bryan Berger.
