Richard Edward Thomas, Jr., 68, passed away peacefully at his home on December 17, 2025.
Richard was born on December 16, 1957, and grew up in College Park, Georgia. He later made his home in Columbus, Mississippi, where he built a full and steady life rooted in work, faith, family, and service. Richard proudly served in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that reflected his sense of duty, discipline, and commitment—values that continued to guide him long after his military service ended. For more than 35 years, Richard worked at DynaCorp, where he served as Chief Supervisor. He was known for his reliability, attention to detail, and leadership. Richard loved to travel and especially enjoyed time spent with his stepson and grandchildren. He adored his dogs and took great joy in their companionship. Music was a lifelong passion—particularly classic rock—and in his younger years, he proudly served as drum major of his high school band. Ever curious and forward-thinking, Richard was a true “gadget guy,” a passion that eventually led him to become a licensed drone pilot. Above all else, Richard’s life was anchored in his faith. His relationship with the church was deeply important to him, and he was an active member of his Sunday school class and a devoted verger at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. In that role, he ensured services ran smoothly, offering care and attention behind the scenes. He attended multiple Episcopal Cursillo weekends and lived his faith through service, consistency, and kindness. His presence and dedication will be greatly missed by his church family. Richard’s ministry was service. If he was able to help, he gave the help. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Beverly Munnerlyn Thomas and Richard Edward Thomas, Sr.; his beloved wife, Beth Abernathy Thomas; his stepson, Blake Gregory; and his nephew, Anthony Bunch.
He is survived by his siblings, Philip Thomas of Atlanta, Georgia; Susie Thomas of Clinton, Tennessee; and Julia Thomas Slayton of Knoxville, Tennessee; stepson, Charlie Gregory; grandchildren, Aaron (Sydney) Gregory and Eva Gregory; great-granddaughter, Blakely; and nieces, Brandi Bunch and Brooke Skelton.
Visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m., central time, on Saturday, January 3, followed by the service at 10:00 a.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 318 College Street, Columbus, Mississippi.
Richard will be remembered for his steady nature, his love of learning, his devotion to faith and family, and the quiet way he took care of the things—and people—entrusted to him.
