A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 28th at Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Father Greg Paffel presiding. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Richard Frank Unger was born December 23, 1939 in Sauk Centre to Louise (Didier) and Leo Unger. Dick grew up and attended school in Sauk Centre, graduating with the class of 1957. Following high school, Dick began his 57-year career with Thermo King in Minneapolis. On May 5, 1962, Dick was united in marriage to Marie Jeanette Wengler in Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. During his work years at Thermo King, Dick patented at least four products that he designed. For the 75th Anniversary of Thermo King, Dick made seven miniature refrigeration units, all to scale for the company and they are proudly displayed at the company headquarters. Dick also had a great passion for farming and established what he called a "Real Farm" with 2 silos. He, along with the help of Marie, raised beef cattle and some chickens besides farming the acreage. Dick built the home he and Marie currently live in and had another house in the construction process. He also loved to travel and recently took a trip to the Cape Canaveral in Florida and stopped at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Dick was a member of the Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Dick will be deeply missed by his wife of 55 years, Marie Unger of Sauk Centre; son, Keith Unger of Jordan; daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Randy Hesse of Chaska; granddaughters, Erica Unger of Minneapolis and Stephanie Unger of Jordan, and their mother, Anna Marie Unger; brother and sisters, Betty Campbell, Mary Ann Bentler, Robert Unger, Lorraine Morgan, Irene Drehsen, and Margaret Messerich. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Louise Unger; brothers and sisters, Jerome Unger, William "Bill" Unger, Leo Unger, Francis Unger, Alexia "Lexi" Sanders, Jane Lull, and infant sister, Rita. Casketbearers will be John Wruck, Randy Hesse, Ed Maile, Roger Schwinghamer, Chris Schwinghamer, and Ray Messerich. Cross bearer will be Jason Wengler and Keith Unger will be the scripture reader. My condolences to all of Dick's family. I had the great pleasure of knowing Dick for the past 8 years. I always enjoyed telling him of my travels, and his stories of his travels. I have made the comment for as good as he looked I thought when he retired he would live to 100. When I started at Thermo King was right after Dick had passed the 50 year mark of working, and being shocked that he had that long, and thinking he must of started as a child, because he didn't look like he could have that many years in. I regret very much now when Dick stopped in at Thermo King since his retirement I didn't try harder to get a chance to talk to him, but when he did stop in it was something like trying to get an audience with the Pope. Everyone wanted to talk to Dick, and I thought there would be more time. I was looking forward to hearing of his travels while on retirement. Dick is missed by many at Thermo King.

While I didn't work directly with Dick, I first met him when he helped us fabricate mounts for our wireless network antennas in the Thermo King warehouse. While this was nowhere within the scope of Dicks job responsibilities, he knew he was in a position to help us and had the tools and knowledge to do so. He didn't know us, didn't have to help us, but he did so with passion and pride; and this I will never forget. I'll also never forget Dick for his fitness routine of jogging around the block during his lunch hour, often with his shirt removed. What 60+ year old can say they go for a run, with their shirt off, during lunch hour at work? Dick Unger can. He was a special person and always greeted me with a smile. I'm a better person for having met him. Thoughts and prayers to your family. May God be with you and bless you.

While my years at Thermo King are no match for Dick's tenure here, I miss seeing Dick in the hallways or walking during lunch. He always had a welcoming smile and a comment or two that made the rest of us enjoy being here. I will miss seeing him at the retiree events. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who knew him.
