Richard W. Weitlich, 89, St. Joseph, Missouri, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2026.

He was born November 23, 1936 to Herman Henry and Johanna Fredericka Hermina (Reinert) Weitlich in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Richard was a proud graduate of Lafayette High School, class of 1954, and later attended the University of Alabama.

On October 16, 1971, Richard married Deborah A. Juhl, beloved wife of 54 years, and together they shared a lasting marriage built on love, faith, and companionship.

He devoted his professional life to public service as a highway engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation. Through more than 44 years of dedicated work, he helped shape and support the roads and highways that connected communities across the state.

Richard was a lifetime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. He was an Elder of the church for 25 years. He began singing in the church choir when he was just 13 years old, and his voice became one of the hallmarks of his presence in the church and community. He was known for singing at weddings and funerals, offering comfort, joy, and beauty through music at life's most meaningful moments. His voice was memorable, and his willingness to share it was a gift to all who heard him.

He also had a deep love for the St. Louis Cardinals and followed them with enthusiasm and loyalty. He was also a longtime fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide and proudly supported the University of Alabama throughout the years…always ready with a heartfelt "Roll Tide!". At his grandsons' ballgames, he was often known as the loudest voice in the crowd, cheering with unmistakable pride and energy. His spirited support and unmistakable presence brought encouragement and laughter to those around him. He also enjoyed grilling for many Missouri State Highway retirement parties, where his generosity and good humor added warmth to every gathering.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Virginia Doesken, Elaine Wukasch, Marion Whitmore, and Charlotte Robinson.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah; children, Heidi Sidwell (Chris) and Derrick Weitlich (Corey Hill); grandsons, Hunter Sidwell (Ryan Warren) and Hayden Sidwell; numerous beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
